Ebonyi Deputy Governor Barr. Kelechi Igwe, has urged Nigeria Military to pay more attention to the border between Ebonyi and Cross River while carrying out Operation Python Dance II exercise in state.
Barr. Igwe who was the state Governor’s representative during the declaration of Operation Python Dance II, said the boundary have been decimated by boundary clashes and it is important they take precaution of it.
He also said the python should dance in the bush and not on the streets of Abakaliki for the interest of the residents of the state.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen. Tukur Brutai on Monday declared Operation Python Dance 2 open in the state.
Barr. Kelechi Igwe promised the Army that the people of the state will cooperate with them throughout the time of the python dance.
He pointed out that the first edition of the operation which took place in 2016 was peaceful and successful and urged the military to carry out the exercise with high sense of discipline that the Nigerian Military is known for.
In his remarks, the Chief of Army Staff, Gen.Tukur Brutai explained that the military did not declare the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) a terrorist group.
He said military did just a pronouncement on the separatist group which he said has made the federal government to do the needful for the general interest of the country. That their activities is in line with the law.
His words, “You have to get it very clear. First of all, what the Defence Headquarters did was to make pronouncement. It wasn’t a declaration per se. But this has given room for the right step to be taken. I think the government is doing the right thing.
“It is not that we are overstepping our bounds. We are still within the limits. And I ensure you that what the military said was to set the ball rolling and to bring the awareness to the public that this is what this organization is all about. I’m happy that the government has done the right thing right now.
He assured Ndi Igbo that the Army will abide by the rule of law and rules of engagement in carrying out the operation python dance II which started on Saturday in the region.
That the exercise was aimed at improving the security situation of the zone which he noted was very strategic to the security of the country.
“The army have taken into cognizance the security of the people in deployment of it’s personnel for the operation.
Buratai further explained that the army in carrying out the operation will work with other security agencies in the southeast region.
“The army is very sensitive to the cultural norms of the people and will abide by all the rules of engagement and code of conduct that have been laid down which is quite in tandem with the Constitution”.
Disclosed that some of the activities of the exercise will include Patrols, indoor battle exercises, Civil-Military cooperation like medical outreach, sanitation, donation of books to schools etc.
And appeal for understanding as it is just an exercise to help improve security and we’ll being of the people of the zone.
Meanwhile, as part of the Operation Python Dance II going on in the South Zone of the country, the General Officer Commanding 82 Division Nigerian Army, Major General Adamu Baba Abubakar, has commenced the first leg of free medical services to the people of Amaagu Local Community in Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
The 82 division Army say the exercise was a directive by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai and it will take place at Nkwegu Primary School.
Deputy Director, Public Relations 82 Division, Colonel Sagir Musa in a statement said the medical outreach programme is part of the activities lined up for Exercise EGWU EKE II, geared towards gaining the support and understanding of the locals to what the Exercise is all about.
The statement read in parts, “The elaborately generous, one day exercise will start on Tuesday, 18 September, 2017 between 8 :00am to 5 :00pm, at the Adult Education Mass Literacy Centre, Nkwagu Primary School, Amaagu Local Community in Abakallki Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
“A team of doctors, nurses and other medical attendants/staff from the 82 Division Medical Hospital and Services will be handy to provide immediate medical support and services in dental, laboratory, optometry areas, blood pressure measurement, among others”.
“Similarly, free medicines, drugs, eye glasses and mosquito nets will be provided. Also children of various ages will be given deworming tablets”.
The statement noted the exercise will further consolidate on the existing cordial relationship between the Nigerian Army and the civil populace in the State.
It was learnt that The beneficiaries of the free medical care, were to be drawn from 7 communities of Abakaliki local government area of the State but only those within Nkwagu Military Cantonment attended the exercise . The low turnout was blamed on the recent clampdown and alleged killing of IPOB members by the military in Abia State this scared the amagu izzi people from coming to receive the good gesture.
