At least, three persons have been killed and houses set ablaze in Akpoha, Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State when two rival cult groups clashed on Sunday night.
Ogbonaya Ukpai, 27,was killed during the clash, Eze Ikpor, 18, who is another victim of the clash was beaten to coma, he is in an undisclosed hospital, while the body of a yet to be identified person was found by the river side on Monday after the clash.
The rampaging cultists clashed in a drinking joint at Amata Area, and then proceeded to other communities where they beat up their youths before setting ablaze some houses including the house of an aged woman whose son allegedly belong to Black Axe.
A source told Citizens’ Advocate that the cultists used broken bottles on other members of different cult group including the Vikings while the hoodlums moved round the houses to attack and then regrouped in the bush to launch more attack.
He said, “Hopeless and reprobate minded cultists who have never moulded a single block went round the village, burnt down people’s homes, the heartless beings who cannot fix a single hair moved about every time, terminating people’s lives. The political miscreants, whose futures have been ruined by the diabolical powers of their political masters, moved around Amogu-Akpoha, stole people’s goats, fowls and break into people’s houses and stole their belongings.”
Major groups that clashed were men of Vikings and Black Axe from Amata and Amogu-Akpoha.
It was further learnt that it was a sacrilege for the son of Akpoha to get involved in cult activities, which prompted the stakeholders in the community to take urgent steps to fish out the perpetrators of the mayhem and sanction them accordingly.
Citizens’ Advocate also gathered that the cultists killed the brother of a police officer serving with Ebonyi State command popularly known as Dagger, while the house belonging to his aged mother was also razed down.
The state police command have arrested five persons in connection with the incident and investigation is still on-going to fish out the remaining culprits.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Loveth Odah confirmed the incident to Citizens’ Advocate and warned the cultists to leave the community.
She said, “On the 28th April, 2019, there were cult related activities at Akpoha by 10 pm. The cult clash claimed the life of Ogbo Enya Ukpai aged 27 years while Eze Ikpor 18 years old was beaten to coma.”
“The houses of all the cult boys in that village were set ablaze by the villagers. They took laws into their hands and set houses ablaze, some houses were burnt.
“The DPO of Afikpo Division said he led a patrol team of SARS and moved into the village. Now, they were able to calm the situation and as I am talking to you, five persons have been arrested in connection with the incident.”
“We have not just communal crises but also cult related activities in Ebonyi State. Everywhere you go in the state, you see everybody practising cultism, what is happening? What is the benefit of a person practising cultism?”
