A 29 year old nursing mother from Ezza South, Mrs. Chinyere Joseph of Ameka Ezza has been caught at Onitsha South Motor Park in Abakaliki trying to sell her 8 years old son on 25th May, 2019.

The woman claimed that she was fed up with taking care of her baby and decided to sell him off so that she can have peace of mind because the father of the boy whom she identified as Jacob Ogodo sent her packing from the house and since then she has been the only one taking care of the child.

The incidence attracted the attention of a Good Samaritan who contacted men of the Ebonyi State Police Command who moved to the park and recovered the child.

According to source, when the police got to the park, they pretended to be prospective buyers and negotiated the price to buy the boy.

On the process of negotiation, she said she will sell the boy for N100,000 but another police officer priced N55,000 and she asked him to pay N70,000, an act that made the police to arrest the woman, but immediately she was arrested, she denied the fact that she wants to sell the child and claimed that she was only begging for alms in the park.

Citizens’ Advocate gathered that she was handed over to police division for proper investigation.

Along the line, a lawyer from Ameka Ezza was contacted; he came and identified the woman and the son to belong to a relation of one of the politicians from the area.

The police then asked him to call the father of the boy whom the woman said was his man friend and both were asked to take care of their son.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Odah Loveth confirmed the incidence and said the suspect has been handed over to the family with the son.

She said that from outlook, Chinyere was behaving like someone who was not mentally stable but warned men to avoid dumping their women after putting them in the family way.

She commended the patriotic citizen who called the police because if the woman had met such people who have been stealing babies in Ebonyi, the story would have been a different one.

She also advised parents to stop rejecting their children because it is a privilege and blessing from God and such act is against the law

Odah noted that the mental imbalance of the woman could be borne out of frustration as she has been sleeping under uncompleted building for a while.
