Road accident involving a brown colour Sienna bus suspected to be owned by a retired police officer whose name was not given on Wednesday night 28th May, 2019 lost control and killed a commercial bus driver and injured many commuters at Afikpo road in Abakaliki.
Narrating the unpleasant experience, Miss Njideka Sunday, a victim and resident of the area told Citizens’ Advocate that on the fateful night she and her friend, Miss Ogechi were discussing at the front of their house when suddenly the driver of the Sienna bus lost control in a manner suspected to be a result of excessive alcoholic intake and rammed into a white bus.
She said that following the man’s alleged recklessness, he hit the commercial white bus and in the process the bus occupants were injured while the driver died shortly after the incident.
“We were discussing without being apprehensive of any misfortune suddenly the SIENNA bus lost control and before we could knew what was going on, we were knocked down” she explained.
She told us that after the said driver had seen the magnitude of the havoc caused, he then ran away alongside his friends.
She also said after the sienna bus had hit the white bus which claimed the life of the driver, and injured other passengers, it also went and knocked down a male pedestrian who was moving with a wheel barrow in the area.
Another eye witness, Mrs. Chinyere Ubewa told us that when police officers who were contacted over the incident opened the Sienna bus, alcohol was perceived heavily from the vehicle while the victims were immediately taken to Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki for medical treatment.
Citizens’ Advocate reliably gathered that some petty traders who are roadside sellers and street hawkers were also injured during the crash.
