Phone Thief Meets Waterloo at Nwezenyi Junction

The common saying that many days for the thief but one day for the owner has played at Nwezenyi Junction, Izzi Local Government Area on Tuesday 2nd July, 2019 when a handset thief was apprehended few months after he was said to have established provision store business.

According to the suspect, Mr. Simeon Nwadum, a native of Ndiogaga in Igbeagu community, while confessing to the crime said he picked the handset during a burial ceremony he attended at Ndiegede village of same community but had been lying to the true owner each time he called the line that he was in Anambra State but would tell a particular woman who used to call the line his whereabouts, unknown to him that the woman was the wife of the handset owner.

However, when interrogated to give true account of what transpired so that he could gain his freedom or assuage the anger of aggressive youth who troop to the scene to unleash their anger on him.

The suspect said he deals on provision and married to two wives, revealing that since he picked it and had allowed the SIM card inside which he receives calls with it and never knew that the man who used to call him was the right owner of the phone and since he had lied to him that he was not in the state, several occasions he spoke with the man.

He said that after he had conversation with a particular lady asking her to come out at Nwezenyi Junction that day, assuring the lady that he would be coming from Abakaliki which immediately he alighted from bus placed call on the woman but received a different face that quickly seize his belt and raised alarm.

Narrating his ordeal, the handset owner, Mr. Iduma Sunday, popularly called Idu, told Citizens’ Advocate reporter that he was attacked with cutlass and other weapons during a burial ceremony at Ndiegede village and the group made away with his phone, money and some other valuables.

He stated that the bereaved family after all effort to recover the items failed, he employed available resources to ensure he recovers his items and since two months the incident occurred he has had sleepless nights and whenever he called, the suspect would sluggishly talk to him even after several plea and text messages to return the missing phone.

He further said that he decided to allow the wife to continue calling the phone reason being that the suspect would tell his wife the truth and since then, the wife had been calling.

The man even called late at night until that particular day he asked the woman to meet him at the junction and he rushed from his swamp farm to track him, immediately he landed at the junction, he was apprehended with the phone.

In his reaction, Nwezenyi Village head, Chief Ola Pius, told Citizens’ Advocate that he received the report at the junction and quickly intervened, noting that after the suspect was interrogated, he said he had plans of returning the phone, and confided in our reporter that proper investigation was still ongoing which he said would handle it to appropriate quarter.

He warned those who engaged in crime to desist from such for the semi urban setting of Nwezenyi would leave no stone unturned to rid the area of unscrupulous elements.

Meanwhile, our reporter learnt that the suspect was handed over to the vigilante group as well as items found on him which included some provisions, the recovered handset and the sum of fifty three thousand, five hundred and sixty naira.
