Over 90 Ebonyi 1st Class Graduates Rejoice

In a bid to encourage excellence, Ebonyi State Government has offered scholarship awards to 90 first class graduates of Ebonyi State origin to advance their academic studies up to Ph.D level.

The State Executive Council gave the approval during its meeting in Abakaliki.

Addressing the Newsmen, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Cletus Ofoke noted that following the state governor’s directive that first class graduates of Ebonyi Origin be employed, over 90 unemployed first class graduates have submitted their applications, and they will be sponsored by the state government for their M.Sc and PhD while government pays them N20, 000 monthly stipend throughout the period of studying.

He said that the office of the secretary to the state government having received over 90 applicants has during Exco meeting,  called for more qualified unemployed Eboyian’s who are first class graduates to submit their applications to the office of the secretary, stressing that Umahi led government was ready to accommodate all jobless first class graduates and would be given equal treatment.

The Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kenneth Ugbala, who fed journalists with the juicy news, explained that the over 90 scholarship beneficiaries appeared before the Executive Council during which they proved their academic prowess by brilliantly tackling questions thrown to them.

According to Dr. Ugbala, the council also approved N50,000 each to the graduates for their upkeep, noting that the overall idea of the scholarship was to position the awardees to face the future and boost further, the academic standard of the state.

The SSG and the Permanent Secretary Designate in-charge of Ministry of Education, Mrs. Blessing Ezeoke in the joint-briefing revealed that the beneficiaries would be deployed to Technical Colleges and Special Science Schools across the state to enable them replicate themselves and to form a first class club that would encourage peer review mechanism among them.

On his part, the permanent secretary designate, ministry of project monitoring and evaluation, Hon. Okike Sunday noted that the state executive meeting has approved the procurement and installation of fire-fighting equipment at the ultra-modern shopping mall at the cost of N217million.

However, the ALGON chairman, who is also the Executive Chairman, Ohaozara Local Government Area, Hon. Chinyere Iyioku said that the school feeding scheme programme of Federal Government team has during their visit to the state penultimate weekend presented to them the list of vendors of which many public schools and vendors were not captured

She however called on the affected Council areas, through the education secretary to write letter to the Office of Rev. Fr. Abraham Nwali.

Three of the lucky beneficiaries who are civil engineers got automatic employment to work with the state government in her project execution while Twenty-Thousand Naira was approved as monthly wage to each of the beneficiaries to encourage them even as they embark on their academic study.

The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Cletus Ofoke announced that government has approved the proposed bill for a law to provide for the domestication of Criminal Justice Act in Ebonyi State be forwarded to the House of Assembly for legislative action and directed that the Executive bill on debt management office be also forwarded for enactment into law.

He further noted that the state government has sworn-in acting Chief Judge who doubled as acting chairman Ebonyi state Judicial Service Commission, Hon. Justice Anselm Anyigor Nwaigwe, who he said sooner or Later would get recommendation for screening as substantive chairman of the commission.

Similarly, the council gave approval for the reconstitution of the state council of public procurement in line with the public procurement law of 2009.

The State government also approved the award of contract for the construction of hostel blocks, school block, staff quarters and hospital block at the Ebonyi State University Teaching Hospital site Uburu.

According to the Permanent Secretary Designate of Ministry of Health, Dr. Christian Achi, Executive Council also gave approval for the takeover of Presbyterian Joint Hospital Uburu by Ebonyi State government now to be known as Ebonyi State General Joint Hospital Uburu.

She said with the letter, added to the covering letter also of the Governor, those omitted would be restored, insisting that no vendor has been sub-changed.

Also, the permanent secretary designate, Ministry of Works, Engr. Obasi Ogbonnaya Abara hinted that Ivo water treatment low lift section contract which was earlier terminated due to the contracting company’s deficiency is now over 80% on completion, whereas, the state government has approved the award of high lift section at the cost of over  N136m.

Meanwhile, the head of service, Chief Chamberlin Nwele announced the confirmation and swearing-in of some earlier designated permanent secretaries among whom are:

1. Hon. Ogbonnaya Obasi Abara –Permanent Secretary, Ministry of works.

2. Dr. Augustine Nwuzor – Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy matters.

3. Dr. Mrs. Queen Agwu –Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

4. Mr. Augustine Udude –Permanent Secretary, State Affairs.

Chief Nwele further stated that for the designated permanent Secretary who failed to live up to expectations after six months would be retired on overriding public interest.
