About 4 persons have been reported dead in a ghastly motor accident that occurred in Abakaliki, the capital city of Ebonyi state last weekend.

The accident which occurred  along Enugu/Abakaliki High Way by G Hostels Junction at the morning hours involved two Tipper trucks with plate numbers KL 319 YY and UGB 743 XA respectively.

An eyewitness Okwuegbe Nkem said that the truck with plate number KL 319 YY, hit 5 persons and 3 persons died on the spot while others were seriously injured on the leg and were rushed to Alex Ekwuwme Federal University Teaching Hospital Abakaliki (AE-FUTHA) by men of Federal Road Safety Commission.

Nkem said, “The truck that was coming from the lane that is entering Abakaliki was with a high speed while the other truck came through G-Hostel side, and entered the road without looking well, but while the first truck tried to avoid colliding with the second truck coming from G-hostel side, he swerved and went to hit motorcyclists on the pavement at his lane and crossed into another lane. “

“He nearly killed a man on another bike by this lane but the bike man who noticed on time jumped out from his bike into the drainage while the truck crush the bike and the bag of melon on it.”

“Meanwhile, one of the motorcycles that the truck on high speed hit fell under the other truck which was also carrying sand.

“One of the men who was still alive at the time of the accident had his two legs crushed and his hands, but I doubt if he would survive it.

Though his heart was pumping but he was motionless. Also a child of about 4 to 6 years was involved in the accident; he was unconscious while his father was suspected to have died in the same accident.”

Mr. Nkem further explained that the motorcycles involved in the accident were about five.

He also commended the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) who responded quickly to the situation.”

“Thank God for the prompt response by men of the FRSC and other Nigerians who took all the victims to the hospital.”

Though the FRSC did not accept that the 3 persons whom people consider dead were actually dead but I’m sure that the hospital will confirm them dead.

Another eyewitness who doesn’t want his name on print alleged that both lorries were on the same lane, while the one carrying sand trafficated, the other one on high speed also stuck out its head without noticing the trafficator thereby colliding with the truck carrying sand.

“Both tippers were on the same lane, going to Presco Junction and the one carrying sand trafficated so as to negotiate to the other lane but did not look well, then the one on high speed tried to avoid the other but could not and he lost control and the vehicle jumped into the opposite lane. Thank God the motorcyclists on that lane who was carrying melon noticed and ran away from his motorcycle, if not, he would have died in the accident because the tipper ran on top of his motorcycle and hit a fence there.

“One of the cyclists who died in the accident is from Ikwo Local Government Area of the state, the man was popularly known as Nwa-Ikwo, while the other man whose legs and hand were damaged is from Izzi LGA.

Also affected in the accident was an office belonging to Elymay Nigeria Limited along the express way which part of the fencing and security wire were destroyed.

Yet, another eye witness and tricycle operator, Mr. Sunday Otubo told our reporter that on the fateful, he stopped at G-Hostel Junction by Express way for his passenger to alight from his tricycle when in a jiffy the driver who was coming from Enugu direction lost control of the tipper, knocked down the motorcycles alongside their occupants and crossed over to the second lane before he was eventually obstructed by a fence in the area.

He said that shortly after the vehicle movement was halted, it was then discovered that no fewer than five persons were already injured and instantly through the help of Federal Road Safety Corps and other sympathizers, the victims were rushed to Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki where the commercial cyclist later gave up ghost.

Mr. Otubo alleged that the crash was caused by the recklessness of a driver whom he said struggled to overtake another truck and in the process lost control.

He further thanked God through whose providence prevented him from being a victim of the accident.

“I was waiting for my customer to alight from my tricycle and suddenly the tipper coming from Enugu direction lost control and knocked down five persons.”

“If not for divine intervention by which I moved an inch from the scene, I would have been crushed like other victims” he explained.

Citizens’ Advocate reliably gathered that the survivors had been discharged from the hospital while the deceased’s corpse was deposited in the mortuary at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital (AE-FUTHA)

The Ebonyi State police Traffic Division have informed the different factions of Okada Riders’ unions of the accident and the casualty involved as they called on them to come and identify the corpse.

Also noted was involvement of a green ladies motorcycle with the number plate QD154AKL in the crash.
