Members of the Ebonyi State 6th Assembly in pursuance to the constitution of federal republic of Nigeria have screened and confirmed the first set of Commissioner Nominees of the state Governor, Chief David Umahi in his second tenure.

The confirmed nominees set to be sworn in by the Governor include former commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Chief Barr. Samuel Okoronkwo, immediate past Commissioner for Empowerment and Job Creation, Hon. Barr. Orji Uchenna Orji, Hon. Barr. Emmanuel Nwobo, one time Rep member and immediate past Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Barr. Mrs. Elizabeth Ogbaga, Dr. Sunday  Nwangele, immediate past Commissioner for Agriculture, Chief Moses Ogodo Ali Nome and Engr. Ogbonnaya  Abara

While Hon. Orji, Hon. Nwobo and Hon. Ogbaga were given express permission with the privilege to ‘take a bow and go’, having been elected representatives before now with verifiable track records, others entertained questions from the honorable members.

Their portfolios are to be made known by the Governor during swearing ceremony.

The House also considered a bill for a law for further amendment of Ebonyi State Local Government Councils and Development Centre number 007 of 2007 and provision for other related matters thereto.

The bill passed first and second readings and was referred to a five-man ad-hoc committee for a public hearing, to enable members of the public contribute to the committee’s report.

The ad-hoc committee members include: Hon. Barr. Linus Friday Nwuhuo (Ezza North East) – Chairman, Hon. Benjamin Ezeoma (Ebonyi North East), Deputy Chief Whip – Member, Hon. Lilian Ngozi Eziuloh (Afikpo North East) – Member, Hon. Mrs. Chinwe Lilian Nwachukwu (Ohaozara East) – Member and Hon. Franca C. Okpo (Abakaliki North) – Member.

It is expected that if successful, this piece of legislation will strengthen the Local Government system in Ebonyi State as a partner in development.

In a similar development, the state Assembly approved a letter from his Excellency, Engr. David Nweze Umahi seeking approval for the implementation of June 2019 Expenditure & Proposals from Chairmen of the thirteen LGA’s.

The letter containing the request by Governor David Nweze Umahi with attached resolutions duly signed by Chairmen of the thirteen LGA’s & the June 2019 Expenditure & Proposals from them to the Speaker for consideration and possible approval was read by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Francis Nwifuru before the House.

According to the letter, Governor David Nweze Umahi said that he was impressed with the transparent and accountability actions so far displayed by the chairmen of the thirteen LGA’s and requested the letter be given accelerated approval to enable them pay their workers’ salaries and as well guide them to fulfill other financial obligations to the people.

The proposed expenditure and proposal from various Local Government Areas which include Afikpo South Local Government – N144,587,814.03, Afikpo North Local Government – N160,769,727.76, Ivo Local Government – N115,887,566.95,  while Abakaliki Local Government – N168,601,752.88.

Also, Ishielu Local Government Area – N164,926,579.65 while in Ikwo Local Government – N187,634,652.13. In Ohaukwu – N179,221,048.43 was approved. For Onicha Local Government – N195,836,666.35.

In Ezza North Local Government – N156,060,392.55, in Ebonyi Local Government – N155,014,863.28, in Izzi Local Government – N205,861,861.00, while in Ohoazara Local Government – N162,265,266.17. Ezza South Local Government has N159,130,864.78.

The motion which was moved by the Leader of the House, Hon. Victor Chukwu, representing Ezza North West Constituency to adopt the letter from Governor David Nweze Umahi as a working document and  was seconded by Hon. Friday Linus Nwuhuo representing Ezza North East Constituency which was unanimously adopted by the House as a working document.

Speaking on the floor of the house, the leader of the house, Hon. Chukwu Victor Uzoma member representing Ezza North-West constituents stated that the letter if approved, would seeks to address the financial challenges faced in the system in the State.

He therefore urged his colleagues to support the motion.

Speaking also, a member representing Ohaukwu South constituents, Hon Chinedu Onah expressed satisfaction over the request.

Hon. Onah said, “Mr. speaker, from what I have seen, I can see development being stepped down to the grassroots, with what I have seen in the proposal, I urge my honourable colleagues please do well to support this letter” he stated.

The letter was put in voice vote by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Francis Nwifuru, and the house unanimously approved the letter.

The Speaker directed the clerk of the house to write a memo to the Governor, His Excellency, Engr. Umahi informing him on the decision of the house.
