… For Misplacing N50 Pen
By Agnes Igwe
A middle-aged woman and mother of 4, Mrs. Ngozi Ekenda, a native of Ndufu Echera Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State has allegedly poured hot water on her 7 years old first child on 19th day of July 2019 for misplacing a red pen worth N50.
Mrs. Ekenda, a breastfeeding mother who lives at No. 20 Onwe Road Abakaliki, about 10:30pm was said to have poured hot water from her flakes on her first daughter, a primary 2 pupil for giving out her red pen to their teacher in school.
Citizens’ Advocate gathered that the daughter, Nmasichukwu Ekenda told her mother, who is a teacher in a private school in the state that earlier in the day, she donated unto her teacher the red pen which her mother bought to facilitate marking of their examination scripts.
Consequently, Mrs. Ekenda requested that their hot water flask be brought to her, which the second child obliged.
Nmasi narrated that when the flask was brought as requested, she filled the cover and poured the content on her, then she screamed and ran out for safety, alerting the neighbourhood of her plight.
Confirming the incident, one of their neighbours identified as Ette Sunny Best whom Nmasi ran to his barbing salon shortly after the incident, described the woman as being wicked.
He revealed that when the girl ran to his shop for safety, he went to confront the mother for the inhumane act, but instead of showing remorse, she was still bragging that no one has the right to question her about whatever she does to her biological child and she was still looking for her with the flask, ‘maybe’ to empty the remaining content on her.
Another neighbour Mr. Martin Nweke told Citizens’ Advocate during phone interview that when he heard the loud cry of the victim, he thought she was being flogged for wrongdoing, not knowing that it is a case of assault.
But on getting to the Barber’s shop, outside their gate where the girl ran to for safety, it became clear that Mrs. Ekenda needs to work on her temper.
According to him, the sympathizers seeing the girl’s state of health grew very angry and attempted to beat the woman up for bragging that it is family issue, and said that she can kill her if she wants, but she was rescued by government appointee, Special Assistant to the Governor on Security and officials of neighborhood watch.
During interview with newsmen, the Special Assistant to Ebonyi State Governor on Internal Security and Utility, Ebonyi Urban, Mr. Nchekwube Anakor who helped to calm the situation and effected arrest of Mrs. Ekenda for assault on her innocent daughter advised parents and care givers to be more careful and gentle with children despite their odd innocent behaviours.
The SA who expressed surprise that a woman could pour hot water on her biological child for little or no reason as such admonished people to be psychologically ready before bearing children.
News reaching us at the time of filing this report, has it that the woman was granted bail at the police station having spent some days there, but proceeded to their Ikwo village to appease her aged mother for pouring hot water on her namesake.
The aged grandmother is said to have been threatening fire and brimstone for the assault on her namesake.
