The wife of the Ebonyi State Governor, Mrs. Rachel Ogonna Umahi has called on relevant stakeholders to join hands together to fight the rising cases of insecurity in the country as it hampers peace and development.

She made the call during the flag-off of 2019 Women August meeting organized for Ebonyi North zone at Ebonyi Local Government Headquarters, Ugbodo with the theme: ‘Effect of insecurity on women and children’.

Mrs. Umahi who noted that insecurity hampers peace and development enumerated various cases of insecurity, adding that women and children are the worst hit whenever there is a crisis.

According to her, “Notable cases of insecurity include rape, cultism, child trafficking, banditry, herdsmen attack, kidnapping, intimidation, and armed robbery. In most cases, women and children are the major victims of this widespread violence and insecurity”

The Governor’s wife reminded Ebonyi women to be alive to their responsibilities by being submissive to their husbands and monitoring their children well to avoid the bad company that could lead to negative vices in society.

She said, “As mothers, we should use this year’s meeting to reassess our roles toward improving our individual families and make our society the best place to be.”

She advised them to take advantage of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) law which has been domesticated in the State and fight against injustice as well as harmful practices against women and children

Earlier, the Chairman of Ebonyi Local Government Council, Mrs. Chinyere Nwogbaga and the Chairman of the occasion, Mrs. Elizabeth Ogbaga described women and children as the very essence of the nation, pointing out that security threat to them is a security threat to the nation.

They maintained that insecurity causes untold hardship and urged participants to listen attentively to the lectures in order to avert the dangers, assuring that the lectures would be stepped down to the rural communities.

“Their ugly manifestations include but not limited to homelessness, poor nutrition, ill-health, poverty, nonfunctional formal education system, hunger, and untimely deaths. Therefore, the negative effect of insecurity on women and children is better imagined than experienced.”

There were lectures on the effect of insecurity on women and children by the State Focal Person Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Dr. Mrs. Ngozi Obichukwu, VAPP law by the Representative of female Lawyers, Barr. Mrs. Grace Iheanacho Chima and how insecurity affects the health of women and children by the Community Health physician VVF Center Abakaliki, Dr. Henry Urochukwu.

In their goodwill messages, Mrs. Adaeze Nwuzor who spoke on behalf of Ebonyi LGA Chairman, Mrs. Virgy Oketa Abakaliki LGA, Mrs. Jane Nwankwo Izzi LGA and the pioneer First Lady of the State who is also the wife of the senator representing Ebonyi North Senatorial Zone, Ohaukwu LGA, Mrs. Eunice Ukamaka Egwu appreciated Mrs. Umahi and Engr.
