The wife of the Governor, Mrs. Rachel Ogonna Umahi during the official flag-off of 2019 Women August meeting at Ohaozara Local Government Headquarters, Obiozara, advised women to be security conscious as well as alert community leaders quietly when they see a strange face.
She gave this advice to the women at Ohaozara Local Government Headquarters, Obiozara which was filled to capacity as women from Ebonyi South Senatorial Zone comprising Afikpo LGA, Ivo LGA, Onicha LGA, Ohaozara LGA and Afikpo South LGA gathered in their numbers for the official flag-off of 2019 Women August meeting.
Speaking on the theme: ‘Effects of insecurity on women and children’, the wife of the Ebonyi State Governor, Mrs. Rachel Ogonna Umahi advised them to be security conscious and to go to farm in groups as well as alert community leaders quietly when they see a strange face.
Mrs. Umahi who noted that protection of the home is in the hand of the women as she encouraged mothers to be role models to their children through their character and conduct.
She appreciated them for their support and enjoined them to respect their husbands.
She said, “You didn’t just treat us as your children but you treated us during election as your own treasures. For this, we are forever grateful to everyone of you that are gathered here today and those that are in their different homes. From the bottom of my heart, I say Thank you.”
The Governor’s wife condemned indecent dressing and urged them to spend quality time with their children to know who visits them so as to reduce cases of rape and other security threats.
“If you wear cloth and didn’t remember to cover where you are supposed to cover, you are not supposed to be called a married woman. How will your children get married? What is important to you is to go and discuss your husband and allow your children to go astray.”
“Honour those you are supposed to honour and create a space or distance as a married woman”, she emphasized.
On their part, the Chairman of Onicha Local Government Council, Mrs. Nkechinyere Iyioku and the Chairman of the occasion, Mrs. Catherine Ogbu commended Mrs. Umahi for not only carrying women along, but gave them a powerful voice and called on the women to listen to the security tips in order to avert crisis or know what to do when there is violence.
According to them, “We should rise and uphold the dignity of women, understand that everything about humanity revolves around women and therefore, we should be humble, loyal, respectful, submissive and hardworking in order to secure and protect the future of our children and grand children”.
They enjoined the participants to put into practice what they learnt to have a better society.
In their remarks, Mrs. Queen Agwu, Mrs. Patricia Anyim, Lady Grace Chukwu and Mrs. Onyinyechi Ali Odefa appreciated Mrs. Umahi for her effort in improving the status of women in the State and assured her of the continued support of the people.
Delivering lectures, the Focal Person, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Dr. Mrs. Ngozi Obichukwu, the Community Health Physician, VVF Centre Abakaliki Dr. Henry Urochukwu and the representative of Female Lawyers, Barr. Mrs. Grace Iheanacho Chima told the women to inculcate sound moral values in their children and to raise alarm when things go wrong to avoid dying in silence.
The event featured cultural dances, welcome song and presentation of empowerment materials such as plastic tables, chairs, umbrellas, sewing machines among others to the rural women.
