Ebonyi State Command of Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) was agog last Tuesday when the first batch of the command’s Agro Rangers Squad was formally inaugurated.
Performing the official flag-off of their activities in the State, the State Governor, Engr. Dr. David Umahi expressed delight for the coming on stream of the special arm of the security outfit.
Represented by the permanent secretary-designate, Ministry of Internal Security and Border Peace, Barrister Ogbonnaya Otah, Governor Umahi said the Agro Rangers initiative was in line with his vision for the State in area of agriculture.
The state government is always responsive to issues of security as this inauguration is in line with the state government’s policies and program on security.
He said, “This is aimed at providing adequate security to farmers, herdsmen and other citizens of the state as we have put a lot of machinery in place for a peaceful co-existence between farmers and herdsmen.
We have inaugurated the state committee on farmers and herdsmen and also Local Government committee on farmers and herdsmen relationship”
The state commandant, NSCDC, Lucy Sammu said the new Agro Rangers Squad was ready and good to go to quell any upheaval arising from the farmers-herders clash.
Lucy said, “Agro Rangers having received one of the most rigorous training from Nigerian Military and Civil Defence is ready and good to go. It will be very necessary to state that Agro Rangers are trained to provide security to Agro-allied facilities, agro-based industries, investments, and Ranches all over the world.
This is aimed at bringing to a halt the incessant incidences of herders-farmers clashes, which usually lead to senseless killings and wanton destruction of property. All those who are into agricultural production are allowed to apply for security from the NSCDC.
She, therefore, appealed to the state government to assist the command to adequately equip the squad for effective operation.
Also speaking, the Ebonyi State Director, Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Daniel Ukwuoma said the formation of Agro Rangers squad was a new dimension in the federal government’s quest to stem the tide of the farmers-herders clash.
“Rangers are to protect the forest, protect the products of the forest and human beings. So, we are very much happy that the problem we are having as stakeholders in agriculture and representatives of the Federal Government in Ebonyi State would be mitigated”
He expressed happiness for the presence of cattle rearers at the event, noting that both parties should play complementary roles in ensuring peace for the state.
“The cattle rearers are here present and they have seen the Rangers with guns. So, there would be no need for them to carry a gun to protect themselves since we now have a group to protect them in the forest; and there will be no need for farmers to carry machetes to protect themselves as well as Civil Defence is there for them too”
He reiterated that Agro-allied facilities in Ebonyi State would henceforth be highly protected.
