Man Slumps, Dies After Coordinators’ Interview
By Oginyi Ruth
The immediate past Coordinator of Ngbo North Development Centre in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Mr. Sunday Igboke, has slumped and died at Ecumenical Centre Abakaliki during the screening of would-be coordinators on Monday by the Governor.
The man was said to have been confirmed dead by Doctors at Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki (AEFEHTA).
The state government had invited all the aspirants for Coordinators’ position who were not civil servants for a one-on-one interview with him after the first screening conducted by a committee set up by the government in June 2019 headed by the South East Vice Chairman of PDP, Mr. Austin Umahi.
The first screening of the coordinators, Technical Assistants and Senior Technical Assistants took place across the thirteen council areas of the state.
Although the Governor had appointed 13 out of the 64 Development centre coordinators, the remaining 51 will undergo thorough screening to ensure that they deliver when appointed into office.
Citizens’ Advocate gathered that the screening started at Governor’s Lodge, Government House, Abakaliki but was later shifted to the Ecumenical Centre near Akanu Ibiam Junction by 4 pm on that Monday after about two LGAs had been concluded.
Monday 9th was slated for Ebonyi North senatorial zone, (Izzi, Ohaukwu, Ebonyi, Abakaliki), Tuesday, September 10th Ebonyi Central (Ikwo, Ezza South and North, Ishielu) while Wednesday is for Ebonyi South comprising Afikpo North and South, Onicha, Ohaozara, and Ivo local governments.
It was gathered that the deceased had complained of headache and stomach disorder in Government House premises before leaving for Ecumenical Centre where he was to be interviewed alongside other aspirants from his Development Centre.
The source said the deceased was seen shivering where he sat, and some minutes later, slumped and became unconscious, and every effort to revive him that evening, yielded no result.
A close family source said that the man must have died of interview fever, adding that the deceased had spent all he had to attend to the wife’s health challenge, and needed to be reappointed, only for him to be disqualified.
It was further learnt that the man had lobbied for the appointment before the Governor decided to use his hand and do the interview which implies that his entire lobby was in vain.
The interview with the Governor was described as a tough one as a woman aspirant could not answer the capital of Rivers and Bayelsa state, while another one failed the square root of 9.
The screening is still ongoing as at the time of filing this report.
