A young man simply identified as IG, an indigene of Amachi in Abakaliki LGA alleged to have specialized in stealing wares belonging to unsuspecting members of the public, recently was rescued from the hands of irate youths by a team of police officers at 13 Water Works Road.
Narrating the incident, an eye witness, Evangelist Ephraim Onyeaka told Citizens’ Advocate that on a fateful morning around 8:00 o’clock, he was driving close to his shop and saw the thief hurriedly tying two packs of CAN malt worth N6,000 on his motorcycle.
Curious of the suspicious manner at which the miscreant was arranging the goods, he went straight to his shop and asked his wife who denied making such a transaction.
According to him, he rushed back only to find out that the man had taken off, but without delay, he was chased and with the help of a neighbor, Mr. Onwe Maduabuchi, the suspect was caught alongside the stolen goods.
He said that immediately the thief was apprehended, he began to plead for forgiveness but his pleas fell on the deaf ears of the mob that was so angry, they descended series of blows on him and inflicted series injuries on him
According to Evangelist Onyeaka, when he found out that the man was about to face jungle justice, he contacted police personnel from the anti-kidnapping section who swung into action and rescued him.
Mr. Onwe told us that he was on patrol during the incident and after he had discovered that the man was accused rightly, he then devised strategies while pursuing the suspect until he was caught.
He said, “I was patrolling when suddenly l saw the man running haphazardly with his motorcycle while a car was also chasing him. Immediately my interest was captured and for that, I took over the chase until the thief was caught”
We gathered that the man had been in the habit of stealing, an act through which he had been taken to police stations severally recently.
