Abakpa Market To Become Green Park Garden

Ebonyi State Government has concluded plans to convert the contentious Abakpa Market into a “Green Park” tourist attraction.
This was made public in Abakaliki by the Chairman, Abakaliki Capital Territory Development Board, Dr. Uche Onwe.
Speaking during a visit to the State Commandant of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Dr. Onwe said his board is currently faced with the challenge of evacuating the current traders in the market to move over to the Margaret Umahi International market.

He solicited the assistance of the Corps in effecting the evacuation as well as in their other areas of operation.
According to him, the State House of Assembly has passed a bill extending the capital Territory to the eight local governments bound by the ring road crossing Ebonyi River.

He noted that building projects and any other infrastructure within the area would now be subjected to critical review on how well they conform to the building standard of the Board.
To this end, the services of the officers and men of Civil Defence Corps would be paramount in the discharge of this duty, he said.

Dr. Onwe further unveiled that the Board was poised to develop two major parks in the state capital to “Green Park” tourism site.
This was in tandem with the vision of Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi to enhance the aesthetics of the capital territory.
“It is our duty to handle recreation facilities, we urge you to join us in making Ebonyi State great”.
According to him, the current effort of the governor in citing 9 inches concrete based roads with 3 inches asphalt overlay across the eight local government areas within the capital territory as well as complimentary decorative lights was a tip of the iceberg of what to expect in the state in the coming months.

The chairman asserted that some people have already been dispatched to China to bring in better decorative lights so that from the university gate to Onuebonyi, Abakaliki would be kaleidoscopic beauty to behold, at least by December this year.

He lamented that his predecessors in the office failed to match the zeal and vision of Governor Umahi for the capital territory but rather resorted to brute force in carrying out its activities which regrettably led to some available altercation with the public.

“It is in the right of the foregoing that we solicit the cooperation of the civil defense in carrying out our activities with civility”
Dr. Onwe hinted that part of his mandate was to block some loopholes through which government’s revenue was siphoned in the past leading to the revenue target not being met.
