The SA to the Governor, Office of the wife of the Governor, Mrs. Stephanie Chima Ekumankama has led a team from Her Excellency’s Office to the Medical Director Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki to galvanize support for the wife of the Governor’s new program called This Evil Must End Now (TEMEN).
Speaking at the Office of the Chief Medical Director, Mrs. Chima said that they came to partner with the hospital to enable them write medical reports and render other assistance that may be required when the programme takes off.
She identified the evil as rape, spousal battering, harmful widowhood practices, female genital mutilation, family abandonment, among others.
She said, “There is a program which Her Excellency, Mrs. Umahi has set up, it is called This Evil Must End Now (TEMEN) and the essence of that program is to bring to an end all the evil in our society.”
“She has considered you as one key person that is going to help her achieve that goal. We always have cases of rape and some other cases that might require a medical report, we want you to write the medical reports appropriately and any other way you think you could come in”
In his remarks, the Chief Medical Director, Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (AE-FUTHA), Dr. Emeka Ogah appreciated the Governor’s wife for the initiative and promised to support the office to achieve the objective.
He emphasized, “I think we will give the maximum support to see to the success of that programme. In terms of the medical report of rape and other cases, whenever there is any case and such thing is needed, I urge the office to write us a letter so that we give it the necessary attention that is needed.”
Mrs. Chima also led the team to the Ministry of Justice where she sought the legal collaboration of the new initiative of the wife of the Governor known as TEMEN.
She maintained that quick dispensation of justice would make cases against the less privileged end within a short period of time.
According to her, “We have come to brief you and to also seek your collaboration anywhere you can, in terms of legal advice and otherwise to see that we fight this good course.”
Contributing, the wife of the Chief of Staff, Mrs. Patience Offor Okorie said that the courtesy visit was to seek their assistance to reduce the rate of violence in the society.
Responding, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Chief Cletus Ofoke promised to do everything in his power to ensure the success of the program.
He said, “On our own here, we shall continue to do our best, using the instrument of the law to ensure that whatever policy and program that Her Excellency has mapped out, we shall give it the legal backing and the necessary attention it deserves. So, we are ready to assist you every day every time.”
While he assured that female lawyers would henceforth handle cases of rape, he eulogized Her Excellency for her achievement in the State through her pet project and for improving the lives of Ebonyians, pointing out that her campaign against Female Genital Mutilation has yielded a positive result.
