Mrs. Umahi Appeals To Police To Facilitate Justice For Rape Victims
By Lucy Anyim
The wife of the Ebonyi State Governor, Mrs. Rachel Ogonna Umahi has appealed to men of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to help in facilitating the process of getting justice for the victims of rape, spousal battering and other forms of abuse.
She made the appeal when she paid a courtesy visit to the State Commissioner of Police in his Office at Abakaliki.
Mrs. Umahi who was represented by the SA to the Governor, Her Excellency’s Office, Mrs. Stephanie Chima Ekumankama noted that justice delayed is justice denied and enjoined them to do the needful to ensure that cases of violence against the less privileged do not last long.
She said that they were better equipped to ensure quick dispensation of justice owing to the domestication of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) law in the state, she disclosed that members of the Association of female lawyers are on ground to handle such cases.
She said, “To see how we can bring an end to all the evils in our society. How do we intend to do that? We have the FIDA which is the female lawyers that are very much eager and willing to work with us.
Most times when cases are reported to the police, we notice that it is important that we accelerate because sometimes due to delays and the rest of them, most of things are swept under the carpet. So we know you as our father and as a man of dignity, with your help and assistance, I believe that most of those things will come to total end”.
The Governor’s wife announced that a body called TIMEN has been set up by her office to ensure proper implementation of the VAPP law and solicited for their support to end crimes in the State.
On his part, the Commissioner of Police Ebonyi State Command, CP Awosola Awotunde promised to work with them but called for proper sensitization to ensure that victims do not fail to report because of the stigmatization.
He said, “I know the case of rape. People are not always willing to give evidence because of the stigmatization. People stigmatize anybody that is raped. Maybe in the future nobody would want to have anything to do with the person”.
“So, my door is always wide open if you have anything to discuss with us or anything you want us to do for you, you can always call on us”.
The State Police Commissioner added that they have family unit where such cases could be reported but assured that the unit would be strengthened to handle matters coming from the office of the Governor’s wife.
The Team Leader, Mrs. Chima Ekumankama and other principal officers from Her Excellency’s Office including the Chairperson of FIDA, Barr. Mrs. Grace Iheanacho Chima also visited the Hon. Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Barrister Samuel Okoronkwo.
