About five occupants of a tricycle with the no EB/NACTOMORAS 304, on Monday evening 2nd September 2019 5 escaped death in a road accident in Abakaliki.
A petty trader and eye witness, Mrs. Beatrice Ituma told Citizens’ Advocate that on a fateful day, the operator alongside his four passengers was heading to Mile 50 when inadvertently, the man lost control of the Keke in a manner suspected to be a result of brake failure and thereby somersaulted severally on the road.
She said that before the tricycle finally stopped, the 4 passengers had already sustained various degrees of injuries, adding that it was for divine providence that the victims did not fall into the drain or become crushed by oncoming vehicles.
Mr. Paul Eze, a resident of the area claimed that the remote cause of the incident was not unconnected with alleged recklessness of the operator and lack of proper maintenance of the Keke and as a result, he advised road users to always tread with caution as to lessen road crashes commonly experienced in Abakaliki urban.
Mr. Eze further appealed to the State government to erect road bumps and other forms of speed breakers at busy junctions within the town so that road crashes would be reduced.
We gathered that through the rapid intervention of the State traffic personnel that the victims were rushed to nearby health institutions for treatment.
