St. Theresa, St. Mulumba and St. Stephen to Fly Ebonyi North Flag at Diocesan Singing Competition, November
By Madonna Nwani
St. Theresa’s Cathedral Joint Choir, St. Mulumbas Joint Choir Abakaliki as well as St. Stephen’s Nwofe is set to fly the flag of Ebonyi North zone in the Diocesan inter deanery music competition.
The competition, slated for November 23, 2019, in Abakaliki would see other zonal champions vying for the honour. The winners would then represent Abakaliki Diocese in the archdiocesan level, prior to the national competition later in the year.
The trio (St. Theresa, St. Mulumba and St. Stephen) had emerged respective group champions in the Ebonyi North inter deanery competition held in Abakaliki last week.
In the group A, comprising St. Theresa and Urban Denary, St. Theresa emerged top, in group B comprising of Urban denary, Mgbolizhia denary, Nwofe denary, and Ishieke denary, St. Stephen’s Nwofe emerged the winner while St. Mulumba carried the day in group C consisting of urban, Mgbolizhia, Nwofe and St. Mulumba.
Speaking after the competition, a member of the liturgical and music committee in the diocese, the Rev. Fr. Alexander Eze expressed satisfaction with the level of competition exhibited by the participants.
He also pointed out that the essence of the competition was to fire the creative spirit of the singers to embrace the modern trend in musical composition.
According to him, it was appalling that pot drum (udu) and malakas (ishaka) employed by our forefathers in music are still being deployed the same way in today’s melody.
He said, “Is there no creative mind that can play organ or piano with a difference and or a flutist with uncanny flair? That is what we want to see in this competition.”
Brothers Jerone Uboci and Andrew Chukwu who served as judges criticized some of the choirs for not appropriately vocalizing their melody.
