Let’s talk-Speed Kills (3)

thrills, but it kills. When I saw this, I never knew what it meant since I have never driven that far, I only drove within the street after my driving tutorials, but I understood speed thrills when I traveled with one man to a neighboring town.

The journey was meant to be for 1 hour, but we traveled it in 40 minutes, he had to overtake several cars, even at bends that he was not meant to overtake to avoid an accident, he did, only God kept us safe till we arrived our destination safely.

Paul Walker said, “If one day speed kills me, do not cry because I was smiling.”

Sure, the speed killed him, but people have to cry for him not because they loved his movie, NO, but because they love him so much and they would have been happier if he was still with them alive.

If you know John Walker, he was one of the actors in the famous American movie, Fast and Furious, he was an American actor best known for his role as Brian O’Conner in The Fast and the Furious franchise. He was born on September 12, 1973, Walker died on November 30, 2013, at age 40 as a passenger in a single-car crash alongside friend and driver Roger Rodas.

It was not categorically stated whether he was on set when the accident happened or he was just driving with his friend.

But we all know the ‘fast and furious’ series with their over speeding in their movies, performing one heist or stunt that must never be done at home, although, they used to warn that they performed those stunts in a controlled environment.

Oftentimes, people are happy speeding beyond the speed limit because they want to arrive their destination faster, they’ve forgotten that no one can run faster than his shadows and they have also forgotten they are not the only road users, but they have to compete like fast and furious and make the road a competing field with others.

If everyone will be patient and follow the speed limit for each road, I believe that there will be little or no accident on our roads.

Oftentimes, when I’m traveling, I check the speedometer of the driver to know if he’s following the speed limit of the area we are at the moment, but only a few of them follow such, most of them just speed to meet up target of dropping those passengers and carrying a new set so as to make more money, while those that are not making money from it are in a haste to get to their destination in a twinkle of an eye.

Some people drive in real life as if they are driving the car in a car race, overtaking cars, left and right, I saw a man that overtook 6 cars in 6 seconds, I was amazed how he did it. I told myself that accidents happen just like that because the man felt like he has done his calculations well, but others never saw it coming and they might crash in him and blood will start flowingon the road.

Did you know that accident is number 10 causes of death in the world, claiming over1.3m lives annually?

Did you know that Nigerian highways are arguably one of the worst and most dangerous in the world.Nigeria loses about 80 billion Naira annually to road accidents. Of all subjects that are involved in road traffic accidents in Nigeria, 29.1 per cent suffer disability and 13.5 per cent are unable to return to work

These are a few causes of accident in Nigeria, by avoiding or attending to some of these things at the right time, we can reduce to the barest minimal road accident.

Poor functional roads, bad vehicle/motor maintenance culture in Nigeria, Poor driving behaviour, Lack of proper driving education.

Driving under influence and over speeding, driving under influence can affect the concentration and performance of a driver, this is because drugs like alcohol, marijuana and a host of others interfere with brain activity.

When alcohol is taken, the first place it hits is the cerebellum which controls our sense of balance and movement, this is the reason people begin to stagger and loose balance when they are drunk.

Others are Improperly planned road network, Bad weather and human error, Use of mobile devices and gadgets while driving.

Over speeding, have you ever heard the phrase “speed kills” well except you’re a car racer of which you’re not, speed really does kill.

Certain roads or high ways have certain set speed limits for your protection, and when disobeyed can lead to accidents because it is not uncommon for a drink to loose control of a car due to over speeding. Drivers should avoid going too fast or over the speed limit in other not to loose control while driving.

Next week, we’ll examine ways to prevent over speeding to avoid accidents.
