In celebration of 2019 workers day, Ebonyi State workers have asked the state Governor, Engr. David Umahi for prompt implementation of Federal Government approved minimum wage of N30,000, promotions and retraining of the entire workforce to ensure efficiency in service.
In the address jointly presented by the leaders of Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Abakaliki comrade Leonard Nkah and Nwonu Micheal called for consideration and conversion of civil servants/public who got additional qualifications based on availability of vacancies.
They exonerated the workers from the warring areas in the state whom the state government stopped their salaries, saying they do not have resources to fan the embers of war and called for payment of their April 2019 Salaries.
He said, “That following the signing into law by president Muhammad Buhari of the new nations minimum wage act 2019 with effect from April 2019 all Ebonyi workers hereby move the motion that the salary structure as approved by national incomes salaries and wages commission be adopted in Ebonyi state.”
“That in view of the fact the civil/public servants in Izzi, Abakaliki and Ikwo Local Governments do not have the resources to fan the embers or acquire weapons for inter tribal wars. His Excellency is hereby called upon to please instruct the relevant agency to pay the affected workers their April 2019salary.”
“That in view of the fact, government in its wisdom set up a fact finding committee in respect of the above subject matter which made the committee of government and organized labour travelled to Abuja, Benue, Nassarawa, Enugu and Abia states. His Excellency is hereby called upon to implement the committee’s report.”
“That in order to avoid arrears of promotions, the commission/boards should conduct promotion interview and release the results as at when due. That teachers and Local Government Staff promotion for 2016, 2017, and 2018 should be fully implemented and the government should create room for improvement of workers’ skills through training and retraining in all MDAs.”
“As one of the legacies, the administration of Engr. David Umahi should bequeath to labour a befitting labour houses to make proper coordination of labour activities in the state.”
On his part, Governor David Umahi said that in as much as he is committed to pay minimum wage as approved by FG, he shall not be either the first or the last governor to pay it.
He called on the state dwellers to be ready to pay taxes ,as the state is committed to pay minimum wage of #30,000 and promotion shall be made based on availability of vacancies only.
Governor pledged to seek alternatives to political appointments in the state, to shun corruption and bribery as he is poised to reposition the state.
Following the Organized labour appeal to Governor for payment of April salary to the civil\public servants in the waring areas,he vowed not to pay salaries to any civil\public servants there till absolute peace returns there.
According to him,it is a measure to shun sponsorship of the war.
