The Nigeria Police Force, Ebonyi State Command has arraigned a 26 years old music operator, Mr. Anthony Sunday Nwankwegu for burying his 5 months old daughter alive at Okwerike village, Abomege in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
Sequel to constant disagreements and fights between him and his wife, Mr. Anthony decided to get at his wife for reasons unknown by killing their breast suckling daughter.
Citizens’ Advocate gathered that the wife after the day’s quarrel in the morning where she was usually accused by her husband of keeping late nights, fed and bathed Roseline during which she slept and was left under custody of her father and other siblings, while the mother, Mrs. Anthony’s wife who sells kerosene, asked her husband to look after their daughter Christiana Junior while she went out to recover her debts.
Immediately she left, the man took the little girl whom he named after her mother, and went and buried her alive at the back of their yam ban.
We learnt Roseline’s disappearance and death was not noticed by any other person in the vicinity untill the mother came back and wanted to breast feed her but could not find her.
Then when she asked after their daughter, the man could not give account of the little girl, then woman raised alarm which attracted people’s attention but before they knew it, the suspect had ran away and hid himself at Egboekwurukwu, in Ideba Local Govt. Area, Cross River State.
But the youths gathered together and a search party combed everywhere, arrested him, brought him home, alerted the police and when the police arrived, they handed him over to them for proper prosecution.
It was further learnt that the man later took the police and the community members to the shallow grave he buried their little girl and the body was exhumed.
After the girl’s body was exhumed, her hands were hot and there were signs that the girl struggled for her life before she finally gave up the ghost.
Shocked by the evil act, the family of the wife from Ikwo Local Government Area took their daughter back home and vowed never to let their daughter go back to Abomege for marriage.
When contacted, Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Loveth Odah confirmed the report and said that police have arrested the suspect.
Meanwhile, on the 28th May, 2019, Anthony Sunday was arraigned before an Abakaliki Magistrate court presided over by Magistrate Ruth Okeh in a suit numbered MAB/357c/2019 for a count charge of causing the death of Roseline by burying her alive.
He thereby committed offence punishable under section 319 (1) of criminal code cap 33 Vol 1 laws of Ebonyi state of Nigeria, 2009.
Sequel to the gravity of the offence which is above the jurisdiction of a magistrate court, the trial Magistrate ordered remand of the suspect in Abakaliki Federal Prison and instructed the police to forward all documents and evidences in the matter to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for further prosecution.
The matter was adjourned to 29th day of July 2019 for report of compliance at the High court.
DSP Odah said that the exhumed body has been deposited in the mortuary. According to her, the suspect who is about 26 years old confessed to the crime and he blamed devil for his action saying that it was not
deliberate but temptation.
The police image maker who condemned such disgusting act said the man will face the wrath of the law and be jailed after the court’s due process.
