Man, 38 and a father of two, Mr Simon Ozibo was said to have macheted to death his mother, Mrs Felicia Ozibo on Thursday 14th November 2019 after accusing the old woman of practising witchcraft while visiting her at Iziogo Community in Izzi LGA of Ebonyi State.
Our reporter who visited the area was told by Mr Okemini Christopher that on a fateful day, there was no premonition of any possible danger in their home as everywhere was peaceful until suddenly when Mr Simon attacked his aged mother with a cutlass, killed her and severed her lifeless body.
He further said that the man who is a fine artist did not have any problem with the woman before she was killed over the allegation that she was a witch and that she had been sucking his blood and spiritually obstructing his progress.
According to Mr. Nwamini, the accused person is mentally deranged, which he had experienced in the past where he inflicted serious matchet cuts on one of his uncles without any genuine reason. He disclosed that it was in view of this, coupled with the absence of able-bodied young men at that period that Mrs. Felicia was gruesomely murdered by her son.
He said, “When Mr Simon accosted his mother and started to matchet the old woman, some persons of whom most are women and children ran for their lives and before adults could rush to the scene, the man had already perpetrated his evil plan and dismembered her corpse.”
Mr Nwali Sylvanus, a resident corroborated the information and also added that the man’s action was triggered by the act of smoking marijuana and therefore apportioned blame on the suspect’s family members whom he accused of treating the man’s health challenge with laxity before the incident.
Mr Chidiebere Ogbaga, a resident claimed that Mr. Simon’s action was in line with the directive given to him by a herbalist whom he allegedly consulted recently for divination through which his mother was accused of being a witch and needed to be killed as well.
He told us that immediately after the incident when the gravity of the offence had dawn on Mr. Simon, he began to fake lunacy to give members of the public the impression that the act was not done deliberately.
The accused person’s elder brother, Mr. John Ozibo said that he did not know what suddenly came over his sibling that made him to commit such crime as there was no misunderstanding between the deceased and her son before the incident.
He attributed the cause to spiritual manipulations of unknown foes who might have sworn to wipe their family from the earth surface as according to him, there was no iota of quarrel capable of resulting to such unpleasant incident.
“Simon and I are the only children of our mother, now that the woman has been killed through manipulation, what if my brother, Simon is jailed, what will be my fate?” he asked.
We gathered that following the volatile nature of the accused person, it took members of Nigeria Police Force, Ebonyi State Command extraordinary effort before Mr. Simon was arrested, while Mr. Simon, on his part under the security men custody was screaming that he did not do it intentionally.
