Man 30 Remanded for Killing Octogenarian

A 30-year-old man, Bernard Oyibe from Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State has been remanded in Abakaliki Correctional Centre for allegedly killing an octogenarian Mrs. Grace Nwokwo.

He was arraigned by the police in a magistrate’s Court, sitting in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, on Tuesday on one count charge bothering on murder.

The suspect was said to have allegedly killed Mrs. Nwokwo, 85 years with cutlass, on September 13, 2019, at Nubia Ezza Inyimagu community, in Izzi Local Government Area of the state.

Police Prosecutor, Barr Mathias, Eze, told the court that the offence was punishable under section 319(1) of the Criminal Code Cap. 33, Vol. 1, Laws of Ebonyi State, 2009.

The charge read, “That you Bernard Oyibe ‘m’ on the 13th day of September at Nubia Ezza Inyimagu Community, in Izzi Local Government Area under the jurisdiction of this honourable court did unlawfully kill one Grace Nwanmini Nwokwo, ‘f’ aged 85 years with cutlass and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code Cap. 33, Vol. 1, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009.”

The Defence Counsel, P.N. Mbam, appealed to the court for his client’s admittance to bail but the police prosecuting counsel, Barr. Matthias, opposed the bail application.

The Chief Magistrate, Nnenna Onuoha, said her court had no jurisdiction to grant bail in such cases.

She directed that the suspect be remanded at the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Abakaliki, while his file should be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions in the state for necessary action.

The matter was adjourned till December 13, 2019, for report of compliance.
