In this 21st century, pornography is everywhere, in the house, on the television, in the newspaper, on our bill boards, in our movies, Nollywood, Hollywood, Ghollywood, Bollywood etc
A child is a human being between the stages of birth and puberty, or between the developmental period of infancy and puberty.
The legal definition of child generally refers to a minor, otherwise known as a person younger than the age of majority. In fact, a person below the age of 18 is termed a child
Pornography is the representation of sexual behaviour in books, pictures, statues, motion pictures, and other media that is intended to cause sexual excitement.
The word pornography, derived from the Greek porni (“prostitute”) and graphein (“to write”), was originally defined as any work of art or literature depicting the life of prostitutes.
According to Longman dictionary, exposure is when someone is in a situation where they are not protected from something dangerous or unpleasant.
Therefore, Children’s exposure to Pornography means when a minor is not protected from unpleasant representation of sexual behaviours in books, pictures, statues and motion pictures.
Objectification of women is what sells products these days, to sell ordinary matches, there will be picture of half nude woman at the back of the matchbox, advert of carwash will be featured by women in bikini washing cars seductively, whereas in real life at the carwash, there are hefty men doing the washing of the cars.
Our Nollywood movies used to be censored in the past, I don’t know where the National Film Video Censors Board (NFVCB) is and what they are doing.
I remembered when I was small, they used to work hard and categorize all film and most of all the films then were decent, unlike what we have now.
The National Film Video Censors Board is the regulatory body set up by Act No.85 of 1993 to regulate films and video industry in Nigeria. The Board is empowered by law to classify all films and videos whether imported or produced locally. It is also the duty of the Board to register all films and videos outlet across the country and to keep a register of such registered outlets among other functions.
The functions of the Board include, to license a person to exhibit films and video works, to license a premises for the purposes of exhibiting films and video works, to censor and classify films and video works; to regulate and prescribe safety precautions to be observed in licensed premises.
Other functions are, to regulate and prescribe safety precautions to be observed in licensed premises; to regulate and control cinematographic exhibitions; and to perform such other functions as are necessary or expedient for the full discharge of all or any of the functions conferred on it by this Decree. The establishment of the Board therefore empowers it to assess, classify and register films and video works and the film outlets across the country monitor the films and film outlets.
Pornography exists within a broader sociocultural context in which stereotypes about gender, sexism, sexual objectification and violence-supportive attitudes are also at play
With the advent of social media, more than half of children between the ages of 5-16 experience regular exposure to sexual images.
Young males are more likely than females to deliberately seek out pornography, after they’ve had access to it’s content, they do so frequently.
Exposure of children to pornography can have a negative impact on them especially in a country like Nigeria where parents find it difficult to discuss sex education with their children, but they only rely on what they taught them in school and churches only, to shield themselves from any sexual predators.
Not that the parents don’t want to give their children sex education, but because the African culture has taught them to keep the issue of sex sacrosanct and must not be discussed in the home.
Blue film is the name pornography is called across the world, but have you ever wondered why it is called blue film? Among all the terms that are used for the adult films, the most commonly used word is ‘blue films’. Have you ever thought the reason behind the use of this word?
Well, there are several theories regarding this. Some of them seem to be valid to some extent while others don’t
these are the possible reasons behind calling the adult films, blue films.
It is said that adult films in its starting days were very hard to make. Budgets were practically non-existent and the film producers used to be very secretive about their movies.
And at that time to create a film quickly and in low-cost they used to give it a bluish colour tint. The audience used to watch the cheap blue coloured films and coined the name “blue movie”.
Another theory suggests that the shopkeepers who used to sell the adult VCR cassettes wrapped them in the blue packages. This is how they got popular as Blue films.
One more reason is stated regarding the “Blue Film” terminology. It says that the term “blue film” means a cinematic production that works opposite to the standard moral code.
Many of us that are internet users have seen popped up windows and requested for you to open it, only for it to pop up and when it’s done loading, it opens a pornography page that shows erotic images
Earlier, I said pornography is everywhere, in the house, our parents and sisters sometimes believe that these are children that don’t know anything yet, they expose their body to them harmlessly, when changing clothes, when coming out of the bathroom.
I remembered when I was smaller, there was one of my cousins that used to visit, we used to stay in their room and gist, but there are times that she would go to take her bath and come back to stay, while we were still discussing, she would clean her body and I would be shy and look away from her nakedness, prepared to go out, but she would tell me to stay and keep talking.
One day my sister told her that I was a boy and I should go out when she wants to dress up, but she responded and said, it was only my eyes that saw it, I can’t taste it. I really didn’t understand much of that until later when I grew up.
That was homemade pornography, there are so many others that have shown their nakedness to their children with the believe that they are children, forgetting the fact that they are in a stage where they can explore their body due to the changes.
Remember, children are tender and are ready to explore their body due to the quick and constant changes that happens in their body.
Sometimes, they want to practice what they have watched in these sexually explicit videos.
