National library of Nigeria extends readership promotion campaign to Igbeagu

As the National library of Nigeria takes readership promotion campaign train to Ndigwe- egede Igbeagu community in Izzi local government area of Ebonyi state, the host traditional ruler his royal highness Michael Ogbonnaya Ukwa has called on Federal government of Nigeria for more robust budget allocation to education in the country to guarantee explosive development.

The traditional ruler insisted that for posterity to judge our political leaders right,they should place education among the first three most pressing priorities of the nation,as according to him education is the bedrock of fulfilled life.

Collaborating him, the Caretaker chairman of the host village chief Nkwuda Andrew who welcomed the campaign team with open hands and offered to make available to them a parcel of land for establishment of National library of Nigeria office complex in the area,stated that though the village is not in heart of the town,it is at the trans Sahara high way.


Chief Nkwuda expressed optimism that citing of library in the locality shall help to the reduce rate of crimes, social vices by redirecting and enriching minds of their youths to more positive ventures.

“It is true that you may prefer to have your structure in the metropolis, but we assure you of better space,hospitality and security. We can guarantee you a temporary accommodation until your permanent structure is put on ground .Let me not waste words,we believe in the saying that action speaks louder than voice “,

Speaking, the National librarian Professor Aina Lenrie represented by Mrs Neboh Rachael Enugu branch head regretted that poor reading culture in Nigeria is now a dangerous challenge to both individual and national development and called for prompt attention to address the problem.

On her part ,Mrs Neboh Rachael spoke thus in part: ” The objective of this exercise is primarily designed to encourage reading among our people despite your age,profession ,gender and class in the community. Hence our mission at this unique occasion is indeed to reform and arouse your interest towards reading so as to maximize the numerous benefits it confers on you as an individual and community in general. Reading enriches the mind,makes a man, librates one from the shackles of poverty,illiteracy, ignominious jobs\ appointments, hopelessness, failure and other factors that make you to be down trodden as well as hinders the progress in the community.

” This program is the brain child of the National Librarian prof Aina,who actually took it upon himself to ensure that our rural areas are reached and transformed through the instrument of reading.

More so, theme of the campaign is ; Reading : A tool for empowering the vulnerable.

Climax of the occasion was hand over of a bookshelf loaded with assorted textbooks from the campaign team to the traditional ruler and his cabinets .

There was also a lecture delivered by the principal of Iboko secondary school Izzi Mr Nwoba Christopher showcasing importance of readership \ education to human life.

The event was attended by the ‘who is who ‘ in Igbeagu community the traditional ruler, his cabinet members ,women groups ,students and pupils and corps members to a mention a few.
