The Vice-Chancellor of Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki (EBSU), Prof. Chigozie Ogbu, has urged the Public Administration Society of Nigeria (PASON) to work towards actualizing good governance for the nation’s development.
Ogbu made the appeal recently at Ebonyi State University (EBSU) Permanent Site, Ishieke, in Ohaukwu Local Government Area, during a courtesy visit by members of PASON as they begin their maiden National Conference in the state.
Citizens’ Advocate gathered that the visit was to officially inform the institution of its National Conference with theme: “Public Administration, Capacity Building and Reforms”, and to seek for its support.
Ogbu, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, Prof Happiness Oselebe, said that the theme was the key and needed to focus attention on governance particularly.
He said hewas expecting the colloquium to address issues in governance where people used positions of authority to assume knowledge of everything.
“PASN, our expectations are high and you have enormous responsibility as far as the conference is concerned.Let this be a means where the nation will fall back to and as you come together to brainstorm, we need solutions,” he said.
Ogbu, however, said that the institution would give support to programmes and activities that would bring the university to limelight.
“The university will give support to the conference in the way it can to ensure its success,” he said.
The National President of PASON, Dr Emma Abah, said the symposium would tackle both academic exercise and examine bureaucracy in organizations.
Abah said PASON was an association of scholars, teachers, practitioners and people in the field of public administration to discuss challenges impeding the progress of governance and development of the country.
He said the colloquium would explore issues of how government had performed in states, local governments and the Federal Government system and added that it would also examine how policies are implemented, reforms in governance and capacity building.
According to him, international communities and Africans from the field of public administration are waiting to make input to the conference.
“We believe that at the end of the conference, Nigeria will have a way of handling public administration. As a national body, this is the first time we are hosting a national conference that will engage members of the association from other universities in the country.
“We have members from non-governmental organizations, human resource managers and practitioners from different organizations.
We also expect critical components of the association who are post-graduate students from EBSU and we will accommodate undergraduates who are members among other associations,” Abah said.
Meanwhile, the Chairman, Board of Trustees of PASON, Dr Sunday Onwe and Head of Department, Public Administration, EBSU, Dr. Chinyere Ndukwe, in their separate speeches solicited for support that would advance the cause of good governance.
