Ebonyi State Legislators Frown at Assault Of Member By Council Boss…Set Up Committee for Investigation

House Committee On Information, Hon. Chinedu Onah by Ohaukwu Local Government Council Chairman, Barr. Clement Odah during committee sitting in the State Assembly Complex.

The members made their displeasures known on the 18th day of December 2019 at their plenary presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Odefa Obasi Odefa, during matter of urgent public importance raised by the Leader of the house, Hon. Victor Chukwu.

Sequel to the development, the House constituted a committee to invite him before the house, to investigate the matter and report back to the House in the next 24 hours for prompt and appropriate actions.

Speaking with newsmen about the assault, the assaulted member, Hon Onah said the council chairman  who was not happy with the stepping down of his nominees for appointment as management committee members accosted him about it but could not allow him explain before slapping him.

He spoke thus in part: “We were at the committee room attending to the MDAs that were coming to defend their budgets for 2020 when Clement Omekannaya Odah, Ohaukwu Local Government Chairman barged in shouting and referring to me as “a small boy”. That I stepped down his nominees as members of management committee, he did not even allow me to explain the next thing was to slap me before every other honourable members.

“The house is already handling the matter. They have instructed that he should be invited and the incident should be investigated”, Hon Onah explained.

In an interview, the House leader, Hon. Victor Chukwu condemned the act in totality

He sounded thus in part: “The house is condemning such an act by someone who is supposed to be in charge of a local government council. The house also views his actions with serious concern. Being a lawyer, he is supposed to be in the know of the workings of the Law.

Meanwhile, efforts to reach the council chairman for reactions at the time of filing this report was not successful.
