Things fell apart in Ugbenyim village, Umuhuali community as a 20 year old Christian Akam from Onunwankwo village beheads Ukwa, 3 on 13th December, 2019.
Briefing Citizens’ Advocate at Onunwankwo, the Acting Chief Security officer in the area, Mr. Jude Nwamkpu said that the boy, Christian who resides at Nnewi came home and went to a prayer ministry at Ugbenyim village (in Iyagwo’s compound).
It was gathered that the boy was taken to the village by his brother on his bike to the prayer ministry.
Mr. Nwamkpu further said that when Christian got to the prayer ministry, he saw a young lady with a 3 year old boy and they greeted because they are from the same village, Onunwankwo and they were both there for the same mission.
He said that not long after they greeted, the boy’s mother went to fetch water to bath her boy and for other domestic chores since the woman in charge of the ministry traveled to Onitsha to another branch of her ministry.
When the mother of the child left, she left her baby with an older girl, who carried the baby on her back to visit a neighbouring compound.
That was when Christian took matchet inside one house of someone who just returned from the farm, snatched the child that the girl was backing and beheaded him
Mr. Nwankpu said that as the neck of the boy could not be cut off instantly, he brought out a bench and mounted the neck and chopped it off completely.
According to him, since no adult from the compound was at home, the small girl raised alarm that attracted nearby villagers for a rescue.
Citizens’ Advocate gathered that as the villagers were rallying round, the boy was busy sucking the blood of the child, raised the head up and began to drink the blood and did not care about the threats from the villagers who were in great tears over the calamity.
Mr. Nwamkpu said that the boy was later overpowered through combined efforts of the vigilantes and some of the villagers and he was apprehended.
The Citizens’ Advocate reporter visited the scene of the incident and in an interview with Christian, he said he was not insane as against rumours that he was becoming mad and decided to go to the ministry for counseling.
While Christian was attending to the reporter’s questions, the mother of the slain child, Mrs. Ukwa, was carrying the head of her child about, lamenting bitterly about the loss that befell her but she was later caught and calmed by sympathizers.
The police was later invited and Christian was handed over to the police at the Ezillo police Division.
The police have made several attempts to arrest any member of Akam’s family but to no avail as they had deserted their compound.
The inhabitants of the Ugbenyim village deserted their homes since the day of the incident to avoid arrest.
The vigilantes in the area with the village head of Onunwkwo on 17th December, 2019 ransacked the villages and arrested the parents of the suspect at Azuegu village and handed them to the police.
Mr. Nwamkpu said it was to avert the intention of the police to launch massive arrest in the area if any member of the family of Christian Akam was not provided for interrogation.
The vigilantes in the area have been commended for their hard work and transparency in carrying out their selfless service to the area.
Efforts to reach the state PPRO on phone failed as her mobile phone number was not reachable.
Citizens Advocate gathered that normalcy has returned to the villages.
