Childless Woman with Cancer Begs for Help from the Public

A middle aged childless woman, Chukwu Janet from Ugbodo Echera, Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State has appealed to the general public to come to her aide before she dies of a sickness she described as chronic cancer.

Janet spoke to Citizens’ Advocate, at Opposite St. Theresa’s Catholic cathedral, Abakaliki where she is currently begging for arms to enable her raise money and go for operation at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital Abakaliki (AE-FUTHA) on Saturday when a charity Organization known as Succour City Foundation visited the beggars to celebrate Christmas with them.

She thanked the foundation for coming to celebrate the beggars but maintained that she needs help to go back to the hospital, undergo the operation and leave the street and start a better life.

According to her, she went to seek for help from the Special Adviser to Governor David Umahi on Welfare and Religious matter, Rev. Fr. Abraham Nwali, but after going there for two months and could not succeed, she went back to the hospital where the doctors advised her to go and source money for the operation.

Janet lamented that the husband divorced her because of the chronic illness and lost her two children while on sick bed and prayed God to send a helper to her and her mother who is taking care of her on the street.

Janet said, “I am not happy to be a beggar. I came to beg and raise some money for my treatment at specialist hospital where I was undergoing medication. I spent two weeks at specialist but because I don’t have money, after spending two weeks at the specialist I came to the street for begging in order to raise money and go back to the hospital for medical treatment.

“Begging is not an easy thing, but instead of me to go and steal or go back to the village to die of hunger, I will beg for alms from good spirited individuals in the state until I raise money and go back to the hospital and treat myself.”

“This sickness started in 1998 like a boil, I got married and gave birth to two children but they died and my husband sent me back to my parents because of it, I have been living with my mother since 1998, I have gone to prayer houses but all to no avail, my mother is currently acting like mentally deranged woman because she thinks too much, she caters for my upkeep.

“I don’t know where to start, we don’t have house in the village should I leave this St. Theresa’s gate to my village in Ikwo, I don’t have anywhere to lay my head with my mother because our mud thatched house has collapsed. I’m praying to God since he has given me life, I will live to know what tomorrow will bring, but my suffering is beyond me, the pain is much, I need help, anyone who knows how to help me should come to my aide so that I will not die.”

“I went to AE- FUTHA last year, the doctors said it is chronic Cancer. That they have to conduct an operation but I don’t have money for the operation.”

“I went to Rev. Fr. Nwali two months but could not receive help from him that was why I stopped going there. Each time I go to him, he will ask me to go to the hospital, When I get to the hospital, doctors will demand for money and if I tell them that I don’t have money,  that I was sent by Fr. Nwali, they will tell me that Fr. Nwali should give me money or written note before they can attend to me, at the end, I will be asked to go home, this is what I have been passing through with my mother.”

Founder of the foundation, Engr. Sunday Opoke in his reaction said it is their core value to help the poor with anything that will make them happy, to let them know that God has not forsaken them.

He explained that the foundation is self sponsored, but the foundation takes special cases to hospitals and professionals which they are partnering with and such person will access medical attention from them as the case may be.

Although he was not specific on the help the foundation would render for Janet.

Anyone who wishes to help the cancer patient, Jnaet can locate her at the point where the vulnerable beg for alms opposite St. Theresa Catholic Cathedral Church, Ogoja road Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.
