A philanthropist, Gideon Osi from Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State has organized a free medical outreach for about 3000 aged people in the area, gave a scholarship to 36 indigent undergraduates and Empowerment skill equipment to the indigent selected from different local governments of the state and beyond.
Dr. Osi, a medical doctor by profession was born into one of the poorest families in Ivo,
To celebrate his 40th birthday, Dr. Osi at the event on Friday explained that having survived the hurdles in life to become a medical doctor, he decided to offer a scholarship to the indigent undergraduates. He further explained that during his school days, he missed classed twice because his mother was not able to pay his school fees, but he was offered a scholarship because he was a brilliant student, that was how he was able to study medicine.
That was why he decided to help the indigent undergraduate and he enjoined them to use the opportunity to rewrite the story of their families.
He said his widow mother raised him singlehandedly that they faced so many challenges, that was why he decided to celebrate with the widows and conduct a medical outreach and empowerment.
The medical outreach that lasted for 2 days had a large number of aged ones that were attended to. He said about a hundred people suffering from cataract were operated by the medical experts
He also distributed wrappers and rice to the widows while hairdryers, generating set, barbing clippers, tailoring machines, and grinding machines were distributed to the people.
He said, “I came from the poorest of families in my community. We had no good house but now I help others to build houses. I couldn’t pay school fees during my days in school, but now, am happy I can now place people on scholarship and help alleviate poverty in my place.”
“It is not because I have so much money but I have the desire to help the downtrodden. I understand their plights. My mother is a widow and I know how she suffered to clothe us and see us go to school, that’s why I will help the widows.”
A Catholic priest who witnessed the empowerment and free medical services, Rev. Fr. Philemon Okoro prayed for God’s blessing on the benefactor for turning the tears of the poor to joy, noting that helping the downtrodden is one of the ways of attracting God’s favor and blessing.
Speaking at the event, the Senator representing Ebonyi central zone in the National Assembly, Senator Obinna Ogba commended Dr. Osi, stressing that the empowerment was beyond constituency project.
Sen. Ogba further stated that former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Anyim Pius Anyim remains the political leader of Ebonyi state whether any politician in the state likes it or not. He added that almost all the politicians in the state benefited from Anyim’s political magnanimity before becoming what they are today.
According to Senator Ogba, he wouldn’t have been a senator without the former Senate President and vowed to continue to acknowledge him as his political God-father in the state.
He, therefore, commended Mr. Gideon Osi for using his little wealth to touch the lives of the indigent persons in his community and beyond and urged the beneficiaries to utilize the gesture.
Sen. Ogba said, “Anyim Pius Anyim is the political leader of Ebonyi state whether anybody likes it or not. Pius Anyim is the political leader in Ebonyi state. He is the one God used for us to make us Senator today, I will continue to respect him, I will continue to give him more respect he deserves. If I am out of the senate today, I will continue to respect him. If anybody is angry with what I said, I don’t care”, Ogba maintained.
“God blessed Gideon Osi and he was given a scholarship and had sound education. Some of us couldn’t get any scholarship and I didn’t have money to go to secondary school. We stopped at Primary school level and started hustling, from hustling, we wrote exams and later attended school. When I entered the police, people were running away from the job. Nobody agreed to join the police force but today, people are struggling to get police jobs.”
“I appeal to you to make judicious use of the items given to you and you should know that to whom much is given, much is expected. You should live up to expectations by doing the right thing. Those who have been offered scholarships should know that they are not going there to belong to secret cults, smoke India hemp or indulge in illicit acts, they should study hard.”
Some of the widows who benefited from the free medical services prayed for God’s continues blessing upon Dr. Osi.
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Virginia Nwameze, from Amuda Ameta expressed her happiness to God for providing such man to assist them in times like this, since nobody has done much for them before and prayed that God will continue to bless Dr Osi so that he will do more.
She said, “People are buying what they need at Eke but I don’t have money to buy even my leg I went for X-ray last year but didn’t have money to go back to the hospital and the pain came back to me. I thank God that someone paid for me to get free drugs today. God will bless GOC and bless the mother.”
Another beneficiary, Veronica Osi from Ihetutu Amaukwa said, “My prayer is that God who sent Dr. Osi to come and wipe our tears, that God will grant his desire by healing every beneficiary of this medical care today. I have eye problem before, but I can see now, even as am looking at you, I know that you are a human being but before I couldn’t identify if you are man or woman unless I hear your voice.
It started by itching me last year, I pray that the drugs they gave to me will help me to see clearly again. GOC, May God care for you the way you care for widows orphans and the vulnerable. May God bless you double and replenish your pocket. Amen.”
One of the scholarship beneficiaries Chinaluolu Onwuka Thank from Abia state, thanked Mr. Osi for the opportunity given to them to study on a scholarship, that God will replenish his pocket, bless him abundantly and promised never to let him down.
