Ebonyi Assembly Lawmaker Pays Izzi Indigent Students’ School Fees

By Ruth Oginyi

In fulfillment of her promise to support indigent undergraduates to offset their school fees and continue their Education, Hon. Franca Okpo member representing Abakaliki North in Ebonyi State House of Assembly has presented cheques to indigent undergraduates from area.

Okpo who chronicled the roles and contributions she made previously towards girl-child Education in Izzi Nuhu, challenged the students to shun cultism and make the best in their field of study.

According to her, good result shall fetch them good job in the absence of white collar job in the country.

She warned them against cultism pointing out that those who engaged in cultism in the past ended up with poor result while some even dropped out of school.

Okpo said, “Make the best out of your time to make good result, don’t allow the school to just pass through you, pass through the school and then allow the school to pass through you. When you combine the two you become somebody tomorrow.

“Form good habit of reading. Our problem is that we devote more time chatting with our phones instead of reading our books but while you chat, browse, equally make yourself busy by reading what you were taught in the class.

“I didn’t invite you for long speeches but we have to do the right thing for better tomorrow. I am not doing it because I have the money, I am doing it for the growth of our educational status, when you are smiling and others are smiling the society will grow better.

“My prayer for you is to excel but, avoid cultism, it doesn’t pay. So many of them that wasted their time in cult related activities, that was not accepted in the society, all of them dropped out of school, some graduated with pass. Nowadays there is no job but if you make good result, you must surely get job. If you make good result, people will look for you. No course is common, make the best out of your field of study and you gain employment as soon as you graduate.

She commended the leader of Izzi Nnodo forum who organized a get together programme on 29th December, last year, during which she was touched to pick interest in payment of the school fees for the indigent as her contribution to the development of the youths.

She recalled that when she was a coordinator, someone said Abakaliki people don’t have trained girls and it touched her which made her to say that any female student from her area who gains admission into the university, she took up the responsibility of paying their school fees and logistics.

The initiative, according to her, actually boosted girl-child education in Abakaliki development centre and now she is proud of Abakaliki women.

Mr. Nwoke Chidi Victor, President Izzi Nnodo Youth Forum, in his remark, noted that his desire is for the beneficiaries to grow beyond Mrs. Okpo, so that they will help others.

“Reading should be paramount to you so that Izzi Nuhu will be promoted and developed. Shun social media and study your book make first class in your department it is not a crime.

“Harvest your time, use it well to build your future. The internet should be used for research and not for chatting on Facebook and Whatsap. Remember that she is not the only Izzi law maker in the house but she is doing this out of her goodwill not because of party or that she has excess money.”

The beneficiaries including, Ogbaga Amobi, Okemini Ejiofor and Agbara Sylvanus, promised to repay Mrs. Okpo by making good result.

An orphan, Mbam Nkemefula, from Nkaleke a 3rd year student of Ebonyi State University Agric Economics who was the only female said. “I am still in the shock because I never expected this type of gesture to come my way. I am just surprise but my assurance to this woman is that I will study hard to make good result so that I will not look for job when I graduate. It is my prayers that God will reward her with higher position, good health and divine wisdom.”
