2 Suspected Vandals Arrested At Izzi LGA

Two young men, Mr Romanus Ogbaruo 35 years and Ikechukwu Offor 26 years accused of being in the habit of destroying and stealing utilities belonging to both individuals and governments were apprehended on Sunday morning 8th March, 2020 by the officers of Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) in Izzi LGA of Ebonyi State.

Addressing newsmen on the incident, Superintendent Ikechukwu Godwin, Divisional Officer in charge of the area told us that the miscreants were arrested through the information provided by a resident of Ndiebor Ishiagu village in Ndieze Community after he had seen the thieves trying to evacuate great quantity of electrical wires which they stole from a filling station owned by Integrated Ogaranya & Son Ltd.

He said that prior to the sorrowful day; the men had successfully removed all the wires from the company and hid it in an uncompleted building within the village but along the line met their waterloo the following day when they were sighted by the resident in their effort to evacuate the item.

“The two men were seen with the rolls of wire and other items by a security conscious resident who then raised alarm and immediately they were caught by the villagers.

“Shortly after, my office was contacted through phone calls and we rushed to the place and arrested them alongside their booties” he said.

SP Ikechukwu further commended the villagers for complementing the effort of his men towards curbing criminal activities in the area and thereby cautioned other intending rogues to steer clear from the council area as the officers would not condone any act of lawlessness.

He added that their rapid response to distress calls and easy access to all the nooks and crannies of the Division were as a result of adequate number of motorcycles provided to them by the Council Chairman, Hon Paul Nwogha and therefore advised other people not to hesitate in dishing out information to the officers at all times.

One of the accused persons, Mr Romanus, an indigine of Aroza village in Izzi LGA told us that they were caught and beaten up by the villagers following their (thieves) act of stealing while revealing that before the operation, they had stolen someone’s bag containing tubers of yam, cans of energy drink, spaghetti and other edibles.

He disclosed that the filling station situates along Abakaliki/Ogoja High way but after the act, their booties were taken to the unfinished structure where they were caught in the course of evacuating the items.

Mr Ikechukwu Offor, who hails from Nkanu West LGA in Enugu State told us that he accompanied his co-accomplice and friend, Mr Romanus to his village before they left for the company where they stole the items.

He claimed that the first accused person was once a staff of the filling station before it eventually winded up.

We pointed out that the alleged thieves had been handed over to police men from Ebonyi State Police Headquarters, Abakaliki for further investigation.
