By Nwogha Ndubuisi Andy
Following earlier demands by affected persons of Ezza North and South for proper compensation over their land taken by Ebonyi State Government for International Airport project, the group had during Exco meeting held in Government House Exco Chamber on Thursday 12 March, 2020 agreed to work with the community stakeholders, but appealed for more financial assistance to enable them erect new buildings even as they declared support for the airport project.
The people during the interface with the state Governor lamented that their actions were taken by the poor ways stakeholders from the area handled their situation which was marred by poor communication.
The group who during their one-on-one presentation claimed that no stakeholder from the clan had ever invited them for a talk before their homes were invaded, stating that the amount of money given to them was not enough to erect a befitting homes which prompted different agitation demanding for fair compensation.
Responding to the request, the state Governor frowned upon the poor understanding exhibited by some faceless group from the area who had been making effort to frustrate the good plan for the state and urged the stakeholders to sensitize the people more on benefit associated with the airport instead of taking a swipe on Government.
He tasked the people to set up some fresh committees where affected persons would be taken care of as proper profiling should be done to ensure no affected persons were left out.
He, therefore, ordered a halt to monetary disbursement to affected persons until the proper profiling is carried out.
The state Governor condemned some speculation that he bribed some stakeholders including Traditional Rulers of Ezza Nation to allow him take their land as he maintained that such utterances would amount to invitation of wrath of God as the stool of these elders of the clan are sacred and should not be played with.
However, stakeholders from the entire Ezza Nation and the four affected communities in a communiqué issued shortly after the meeting resolved as follows,
“Sequel to the controversies trailing the siting and construction of an International Airport on Ezza land and other issues thereto, the stakeholders of Ezza nation in conjunction with those whose houses and homes were affected by the Airport project, met with the Executive Governor of Ebonyi State and rose with the following resolutions:
“That we reaffirm our gratitude to the Governor and government of Ebonyi on the decision to site the construction of an Airport of International status on Ezza land and further pledge our commitment towards the actualization of the project”.
“That we sympathize with our displaced brothers and sisters in the four communities affected by the Airport project but appeal to them to appreciate the vision and the good intention of the government in locating the legacy project on our land by accepting the temporary discomfort as a sacrifice that has to be made for the development of our state”.
“That four committees shall be set up to revisit and revalidate the mapping and profiling of homes and houses affected by the stretch of the Airport land for adequate assistance for permanent resettlement. The committees have seven days to complete and submit their report”.

Any opposition to the project does not emanate from any true born of Ezza and as such does not represent our individual nor collective position on this matterFollow us
