…Over Compilation of Lists

By Nwogha Ndubuisi Andy

The members of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi State are not comfortable with the compilation of names made by the state government for the Federal Government palliatives.
The state APC Chairman, Pastor Eze Nwachukwu Eze, made this known in his briefing with journalists in Abakaliki.
Earlier, Governor David Nweze Umahi has directed for the compilation of names at ward level for the distribution of Federal and State Government palliatives devoid of party affiliation to cushion the effect of Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown hard experiences.
The state APC Boss has alleged that their members were not captured by the state ruling PDP agents during the exercise.
He maintained that the Federal government intervention material was highly politicized in Ebonyi State and however, wondered why the State government was unable to enroll poor Ebonyians into the Federal government cash transfer programme initiated by the party at the National level since 2016.
He said, “One will be surprised that the conditional cash transfer contained in our party manifesto, that several States has since 2016 been enjoying, Ebonyi has no record in the programme. We therefore call on the Governor to come out and explain to the state why such lofty federal government project meant to reduce the suffering of the people has not been benefited by Ebonyians.”
“If not for the magnanimity of our dear President who ordered recently that additional 1,000,000 Nigerians be captured, Ebonyi would have been left out. But regrettably, the process is highly politicized and we frown at it. Reports from our party faithful have it that in the area where they collate these names, they deny our party members registration.”
“We call on the attention of the Federal government and the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to take note and ensure that justice is done on the names in Ebonyi state. If not, it should be considered efforts in futility”, he said.
The party commended the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari in tackling the spread of Coronavirus in the country.
“Ebonyi APC commends the resilience of our dear President in tackling the spread of COVID -19 in Nigeria. All the steps he has taken so far are laudable and World Health Organization has not failed to commend him for his role in fighting the scourge. Most importantly is his proactive steps in setting up silos in Nigeria, through which food items are been distributed to all parts of the country. We as well condole with our dear President on the demise of a faithful member of our party and the Chief of staff to the President, late Mallam Abbah Kyari”, he added.
Nwachukwu also commended the state Governor, Dave Umahi for his resilience in the fight against the disease and ensuring that no case of the virus is recorded from Ebonyi.
However, the state PDP Chairman, Barr. Onyekachi Peter Nwebonyi concluded that the APC’s conference was aimed at causing confusion in the state.
Barr. Nwebonyi saw Pastor Nwachukwu’s comment during the conference as quite an unfortunate one.
He pointed out that, “Instead of the APC in the State to collaborate with other well-meaning citizens of the state in the task of preventing the spread of the novel Coronavirus in the state, they resorted to cheap propaganda and blackmail which no one is interested in at this time.”
“APC in Ebonyi State is a collection of failed politicians who have fallen out of favour with their people. It is unfortunate that as a ruling party at the federal level, APC in Ebonyi State will stay moribund, year in year out, without any programme or activity to keep it alive in the state. In fact, Ebonyi State Chapter of the party is a disgrace to the APC national body and the party’s controlled federal government. They are in the habit of crying wolf instead of thinking about people-oriented programs that could keep them afloat in the state.”
“How ridiculous it is that a remnant of disgruntled political elements who call themselves APC leaders in the state would ask for the resignation of the governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. David Umahi and at the same time shower him encomium for his proactiveness in handling the COVID-19 pandemic in the state.”
“Most worrisome is that the party has not been able to organize a rally or SEC meeting since it lost woefully in the 2019 general elections in the state. Trying to get noticed as a political party is not by making frivolous jokes.”
“Anyway, the press conference granted by the APC in Ebonyi State is a comic relief to the people that are bearing the pangs of the harsh realities posed by the containment measures for the COVID-19 pandemic. It is laughable that APC is blaming Governor Umahi for the APC controlled federal government’s blatant refusal to include Ebonyi State in the first tranche of the Conditional Cash Transfer Scheme, instead of apologizing to Ebonyians for their inability to attract same to the people.”
“Classification of Ebonyi State as one of the poorest states in the country is no making of Engr. Chief Dave Umahi, rather, he has delisted the state from that category through numerous empowerment programmes which no single Ebonyian has not benefited from, in one way or the other, either directly or indirectly. Contrary to the insinuation that APC members are being denied participation in the collation of names of poor and vulnerable people in the state, effort is being made by the state government to capture all the people in that category across the state. Village heads, town union leaders, ward councilors, and other stakeholders are all involved in the exercise.”
“Again, the claim that APC has 500,000 members in Ebonyi State is an alternative fact; a prevarication. I make bold to state that APC has not up to 1000 members in Ebonyi State. In fact, APC does not have complete executives in up to ten wards in the state, especially after the crushing defeat it suffered in the 2019 elections in the state.”
“I only wish to call on the APC leadership in Ebonyi State to embrace the spirit of patriotism and play its role as the leading opposition party in the state. Governor Umahi welcomes criticism, but that is when it is genuine and constructive. I also call on the very resilient people of Ebonyi State not to be swayed by the rantings of mischievous attention seekers. By the Grace of God, we shall not experience the virus in Ebonyi State. Governor Umahi, out of shrewdness, has been on top of the situation, and I commend him for that.”
