Sequel to the crisis suspected to be cult activities recently experienced in Owutu Edda Community, the members of fact-finding and intervention committee instituted by Edda People’s Assembly saddled with the responsibility of identifying both the remote and immediate causes of the problem had been urged to accelerate their processes.
This was made known in Abakaliki by the Commissioner for Internal Security, Border Peace and Conflict Resolution, Hon. Stanley Emegha on Sunday 9th May, 2020 during the stakeholders meeting that comprised the political officer holders, Traditional Ruler, Town Unions’ Executives among others.
He said that the people had condemned the wanton destruction of lives and properties by the suspected cultists and thereby banned all forms of cult activities, drug peddling and other related acts in Edda clan while appealing to the affected persons to remain calm and allow the state government through the security agencies to carry out full investigation into the matter.
“It is a welcome development, the formation of Edda fact-finding and intervention committee by Edda People’s Assembly assigned with the responsibility of identifying both the remote and immediate causes of the crisis in Edda clan which had led to the loss of lives and properties.”
“We are urging all the citizens to take advantage of the committee to advance their grievances with a view to finding a lasting peace in Edda clan”, he said
According to Hon. Emegha, the members of the committee had been mandated to work tirelessly and complete their assignment within the stipulated time given and after which an official report would be forwarded to the government.
However, the stakeholders suggested that all the vacant Traditional Rulers positions in Afikpo South LGA should be filled while the Traditional Institution should be strengthened to enable them effectively discharge their duties of maintaining peace and order in their various domains.
“We are equally urging the commissioner of police to look into the activities of some police officers who have stayed for a long time in Edda with a view of re-deploying them” they said
They further commended the state governor, Engr. David Umahi for his ingenuity and contributions to the development of Ebonyi State and Edda clan and urged him not to be distracted following the recent development in the area noting that Edda people would partner with him and security agencies in the course of their investigation so that the people behind the crisis would be identified.
