In what could be described as seasonal disrupt occasioned with farming period at the hinterlands in different parts of Ebonyi communities which are characterized by a struggle to grabbing some portion of farmland and leadership tussle, the Special Assistant to Ebonyi State Governor on Internal Security and Public Utilities, Comrade Ben Nwovu, on Saturday 16th March, 2020 identified kindred dichotomy and political thuggery as the major causes propelling the situation.
Comrade Nwovu who is Governor David Umahi’s aide on Security and Public Utilities of Ebonyi North Zone made this known while briefing newsmen at his residential compound, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State Capital.
The Special Assistant to the Governor, who was speaking on the rates of crises trailing the communities and villages of the state frowned at the situation where people have adopted kindredship in choosing their village and community leaders, saying these days, it is a problem affecting the major parts of Izzi clan.
According to him, there are different kinds of conflicts currently rocking various communities and villages which majority of the crises had led to destructions of lives and valuable property worth millions of naira.
He noted that investigations carried out by his office has found out that kindredship and political thuggery are the two major factors causing internal crises in most part of the North, especially in Izzi land, warning youths to eschewed from being instrument for Political thuggery as no Public Office holders gets to the top by such unholy lifestyle.
Comrade Nwovu who is also the President of Izzi Nnodo Youth Forum called on all well meaning Izzi sons and daughters to join in the fight against any kind of crises emanating from kindredship and political thuggery in their various quarters, adding that the two factors have characterized their communities and villages, causing land disputes, cult clashes, and other internal vices degenerating insecurities and consequently continued to promote underdevelopment.
He condemned a situation where people engage into village conflicts for many years, spending their little resources in their course of seeking justice in the law court and from other relevant offices instead of investing such in their general well being.
While noting that his office and other appointed security officials would not relent in ensuring that the state remains the most peaceful in the country, and stressed that he had at different occasions mediate in issues bordering on some persons seeing themselves as to be above government and warned the people to be law abiding, even as they know that Umahi led administration would not tolerate rift associated with land grabbing.
He, however, called those who fuel village crises to desist from such act as that undermines the programme and policies of the state government.
Meanwhile, he advised the people not to see leadership as a do or die affairs, pointing out that most people have seen leadership position as only meant for themselves or their close relatives and he said the syndrome is the worst practice that hinders the future of the people.
His words, “Our people should not see leadership as do or die affairs. Most of the problem we have in our leadership system is that, many people see leadership as if it is must be me or my brother and relatives.”
“Even the village councillorship is not a contestable position, it is given to people that have passion for his people.”
“Before now, some people do reject to be a village councilor considering its tasky nature.
“But, these days, people are contesting it. Those you see struggling to be village heads must have one bad reason or the other. I am of opinion that the issue of village head should look beyond the kindredship.”
“It should be given to persons who have passion for their people irrespective of kindredship. I have gone to conduct elections in many villages, it was beyond kindred. I have even gone to the apex association which is Izzi forum, comprising of the youth and the elders.”
“We would have come up with strong resolutions, but it is delayed because of this Covid-19 pandemic. And I believe at the end of this pandemic, the resolutions will be passed.
“This will go to the nooks and crannies of Izzi Clan. It is going to be the general principles of which the Izzi sons and daughters will stand to operate. It will be the guidelines and I believe with the central guidelines, all the communities of Izzi clan shall abide by it.
“I believe with this, we shall stand firm and the change we expect must come in our land”, he explained.
