Danger was averted on Thursday at Udensi Roundabout, few metres to Government House Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital following an alleged clash between Police Traffic warden and soldiers.
It was gathered that trouble started when Traffic warden impounded a Tricycle owned by an army officer for violating Traffic light code.
When efforts to released the Tricycle failed, the driver called the soldier who own the tricycle
An okada man who witnessed the melodrama narrated that minutes later, the soldier arrived with another Tricycle and asked after the Traffic Police who impounded his Tricycle but he was told that he has left for the day.
He said the Traffic Police allegedly engaged the Soldier prompting a detachment of military men on guard at the Akanuibiam International Conference Centre, ICC to rush to the scene and joined the free for all.
While the matter was being settled inside ICC, a detachment of Mobile Policemen and Operatives of Anti Robbery Squad from the command headquarters arrived in the scene and charged at the military on army camouflage.
The eyewitness, further alleged that Soldiers however responded by cocking the trigger of their guns while making calls for reinforcement from Nkwoagu military base.
“It took the intervention of senior police officers from the Police Headquarters Abakaliki to calm the situation and avoid what would have been a major security scare and bloodshed as reinforcement from Army base arrived in the scene minutes later “. Source said.
As at the time our correspondent visited the scene, the police were seen gathered in one place while other tricycle operators and motorcyclists were watching from the other side of the road after running from a far distance.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Loveth Odah confirmed the story and said it was a minor issue and not a clash,” it was a traffic issue, the soldier was not directly involved”.
She said that after the drama, the soldiers were taken to the police command where the cantonment commander came and the matter was resolved
