Ebonyi State Chapter Nigeria Union of Journalists led by Comrade Tony Nwizi yesterday appreciated the State Governor Engr. David Umahi for remembering men of fourth Estate of the Realm in his gift to cushion the effect of Covid-19.
The State Chairman made the disclosure at Dr.Sam Egwu press Centre, Abakaliki, while responding to Newsmen, noting that the union received one hundred bags of 25kg rice with five million naira as Covid-19 palliative.

He expressed gratitude to the Governor who was represented by Speaker Ebonyi State House of Assembly, and Chairman Covid-19 Fund Raising Committee,Rt.Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, who in his nature of being sensitive to the plight of his people made the donation.
According to him,” Ebonyi State government led by Engr. David Nweze Umahi in its wisdom and by way of being sensitive to the plight of his people who were faced with the global ravaging scourge, Corona virus today deemed it necessary to visit Ebonyi NUJ as he was represented by Speaker Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, and donated to us 100 bags of 25kg rice with 5million naira.

“The donation was a palliative to cushion the effect of the lockdown and other clampdown on activities in the state because of Covid-19 and all the Secretaries and Chairmen of fifteen (15) chapels were adequately represented including other state stakeholders of the union.
“We Express gratitude to the Governor for remembering us the Journalists especially this period that everybody is asking for assistance in one way or the other to cushion the hardship posed by Corona virus outbreak”.
The State Chairman called the government to see members as partners and not opposition, stressing that Journalism profession remains a watchdog for a better society.
“I am calling Government to see us as partner in progress. Sometimes, the public see Journalists as an Opposition to government, people expect us to fight the government the way Opposition Party members do but our job as the fourth Estate of the Realm is to partner adequately with the government and report positively for the development of the state”.
“Just like the legislature and judiciary are different arms of the government, most times, when Executive is found wanting or found short of its obligation; you see legislature, judiciary and members of the Fourth Estate of the Realm agitating and that’s when people thought the press is doing their job”.
“But Journalism is far from that alone, when a government is up and doing with the Executive on its core mandate, thereby, effecting positive impact on the people, some people will begin to say press is not doing their work by hitting on the government because they are dormant and not fighting the government by attacking them”.
Comrade Nwizi hinted that Journalism goes beyond attacking government in power but also projecting good work of the state Governor who has proven his Leadership ingenuity.
He further called on other good spirited individuals to toe the path of Governor Umahi who has recognized the role of media Practitioners for having being at the forefront of the war even when people are in isolation as to fetch current and accurate news for public consumption, stating that such support would boost members morale in doing the job.
