The official house of the Bishop of Methodist Church, Bishop Lawson Elom was on Friday 29th May, 2020 invaded by 5 unknown gunmen numbering over five persons along onwe road, Abakaliki.
The armed men allegedly jumped in through the fence into the premises in the late hour of the night when the man of God had traveled.
It was gathered that the alleged gunmen firstly stormed the bishop son’s room, where they maltreated and mandated him to show them where they kept money or waste his life, immediately they dragged him to the inner room where the bishop’s wife and his children were sleeping.
It was gathered that they threatened to shoot them dead if they fail to dance to their tune, they were held hostage until their mission was accomplished.
Narrating her ugly experience, the bishop’s wife, Mrs. Elom told us that the alleged gunmen stormed their compound exactly 1:00am, held them hostage and directed them to bring all the available penny or lose their lives, the development which pushed her and her son to take them to their room, where they looted all the available properties.
She said, “When they burgled our house, they first entered my son’s room, maltreated him and instructed him to take them inside our room where I was sleeping, immediately they came to me, they ordered me to bring them everything we have or they will waste all of us, I told them that we have no money in the house, they insisted that they will kill all of us if they searched by themselves and find any money.”
“They asked me about the Lord’s Bishop, I told them that he traveled, then they told me to take them to his room and they collected all his blessed sacraments, Episcopal gowns, cheque books, househelp’s ATM card, bags of rice, plasma TV, and eight mobile phones.”
She explained that the gang men positioned at the strategic entrance of their room, on the watch while one of them was sent to rush to the bank with the collected ATM card on the directive to notify them if the pin is incorrect so that they will shoot all of them to death, but the gang member return with N34,000 and left N1000 in the account.
She recalled that on the 17th March, 2020, suspected armed men invaded Methodist church along onwe road, Abakaliki, a stone throw to the bishop’s court and made away with all the musical instruments in the church including five industrial fans.
She appreciated God that no life was lost and prayed him to unravel the circumstances surrounding the situation.
She further called on the security agencies in the state to deploy their men to the area to safeguard lives and properties and as well investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to book.
