Govt Rehabilitates Suspected Lunatic

…Calls For Collection Of Her Son

A 38 year old woman, Mrs. Mercy Ugo Ezekiel Akpoke said to have been battling with mental ailment was recently picked from street by some staff of Ebonyi State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development to be rehabilitated.
Speaking during the rescue mission at Ezzamgbo Junction in Ohaukwu LGA, Head of Department, Child Development, Mr. Godwin Igwe told newsmen that the ministry was prompted by the need to restore the woman’s health to enable her take care of her son, Master Ogbonna David who had been under the custody of his office since last year.

He said that around October 2019, the woman abandoned her three years old son at Ishieke area because of the health challenge but following the effort of a Good Samaritan, the boy was picked and brought to the ministry.
“In our efforts to find the child’s relatives after he was brought to us, a town crier’s service was engaged who moved round Ishieke market square and announced the boy’s whereabouts but nobody came until recently that we got information stating that the woman had been roaming all the streets at the junction,” he said.
Following some enquiries, it was discovered that the woman, said to be an indigene of Isukwuato in Abia State had married to a police officer from Ezza in Ohaukwu who died in road crash and as a result of the incident, Mrs. Mercy Ugo became worried until she found herself in a state of insanity.
According to him, after he had seen the woman’s pathetic situation, he then approached the commissioner on how the lunatic could be helped to enable her regain the former health and take care of the child and fortunately, the request was granted with logistics for the journey.
He disclosed that the woman had been under intensive medical treatment at Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (FETHA) courtesy of their ministry after she was rescued at Ezzamgbo by a team of staff led by prophetess Jacinta Nwakaego Nworie, Executive Assistant to the Governor on Women Affairs.
Desk Officer, Orphan And Vulnerable Children of the Ministry, Mr. Emmanuel Nkwuda said that the exercise was carried out to enable the woman undergo psychiatric treatment and become rehabilitated before she could be re-unite with her son who had been in their custody for approximately one year.
“The essence of presenting Mrs. Mercy Ugo to the public is for her to be identified by her family members and other relatives. Currently, she is receiving treatment at FETHA courtesy of the ministry.
“Thereafter, she will be rehabilitated before re-uniting her with the boy,” he said.
The Desk Officer, praised the Commissioner, Hon. (Mrs.) Ogbuewu and the state governor, Engr. David Umahi for creating enabling environment through which the woman was saved and also appealed that the gesture should be extended to others in such need.
Prophetess (Mrs.) Nworie, the team leader told us that the woman believed to be volatile by some residents of the area following her condition was tranquilized by divine power against the ministry’s initial plan of bundling her with chains and padlocks.
“Before we embarked on the trip, we had bought chains and padlocks to subdue her but along the line I decided to take a spiritual step first with the intention that, if the measure fails, we shall go for plan B.
“Surprisingly, upon the introduction of praises and prayers, the woman who had neither taken bath nor changed her wears since the past one year and eight months began to comply and even requested to have her hair shaved.
“This is how she was delivered and rushed to the hospital for treatment,” she said.
Recall that the ministry had in the time past through many publications called for the collection of Master Ogbonna when he was handed over to the staff.
Mrs. Mercy Ugo, on her part told us that her problem started during her tender age but became intense after she had graduated from Alvan Ikokwu Federal College of Education at Umuahia.
The woman further said that initially, she was staying at Ishieke area but later relocated to Ezzamgbo Junction after some unknown persons had snatched her son, Master Ogbonna.
Some residents of the area, Mr. Timothy Nwachukwu, Pastor of Redeemed Christian Church of God, Mrs. Blessing Nnenna Ude and Mrs. Rosemary George respectively confirmed that the woman had wandered the area since the past one year and thereby praised Ebonyi State government and the officials for saving the lunatic.
