Following the increase cases of covid-19 in Ebonyi state, the state Governor, Engr. David Umahi on Monday 14th June, 2020 said that he will pay a greater attention to the health sector, security and the payment of workers salary as his administration is geared on improving the health life of every Ebonyian.
He made the declaration in Abakaliki while commissioning the ultra modern General Hospital Elinwobvu which was fully completed, kitted with the needed medical equipments and upgraded as covid-19 treatment center in line with the standard set by NCDC with over one hundred and fifty capacity beds including ventilators, ultrasound machine, laboratory, digital x-ray machines and theatre.

The governor, however, directed the Executive Council Committee for the renovation of the thirteen general hospitals headed by the Senior Special Assistant to the governor on human capital development and monitoring, Mrs. Ann Aligwe to immediately commence the renovation of the hospitals located at Ikwo and Onitsha local government areas, stressing that government will stop at nothing to ensuring that all the thirteen general hospitals are completed and effectively equipped to provide the health care need of the people.

He approved one million naira to the hospital for its general maintenance, pointing out that health, security and workers salary remains the areas of his focus in this critical season.
He commended the committee for their timely completion of the job and according to the standard required by NCDC.

In his reaction, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Daniel Umezuruike explained that over thirty thousand samples have been tested while one hundred and eighty two persons tested positive out of which, eighty six have been successfully discharged.
He said that front line health workers have been deployed to the treatment center including doctors and nurses, revealing that Medical Personnel quarters are also equipped and fully ready for occupation.
Earlier, the chairman EXCO committee on renovation of the general hospitals Mrs. Ann Aligwe said the committee worked hard to meet up with the time given by the state Governor and therefore appreciated the state government for giving them the opportunity to serve.
In an interview, the Caretaker Chairman of Abakaliki Local Government Area, Hon. Benedict Nwovu hinted that adequate security will be provided to the hospital to safeguard the facility from vandals.
He nodded the state Governor for the proactive measures put in place in ensuring that the disease spread is curtailed, assuring him of his council support, he advised the general public to adhere to the world Health Organization’s precautionary measures.
On his part, the caretaker chairman, Ebonyi Local Government Area, Prince Francis Nwogbaga commended Governor Umahi for his effort which aimed at ensuring that nobody dies of covid-19 in the state.
Lending his voice, the immediate past chairman of Abakaliki Local Government Area, Hon. Emmanuel Nwangele thanked the governor for upgrading the hospital to a virology Center which is number one hospital in the South East stating that the council would ever remain grateful to him.
