Three suspects, Alaoma Onwuyiriuba, Amagu Moses and Nworie Victor have been arrested for adulteration of NPK Golden fertilizer in Abakaliki by the officers of Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Ebonyi State.
Parading the suspects at their command headquarters, the command’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Ebonyi State, Chief Superintendent Paul Odimba said his men acting on a tip off arrested the suspects in the very act of adulterating the agro chemical at a makeshift factory at Hossana park in Abakaliki
Speaking on behalf of the State commandant, Lucy Samu, CSC Odimba said the arrest was in tune with the Civil Defence mandate on chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear protection of the populace.
He observed his men were ever ready to discharge their mandate on critical infrastructure protection with useful information from members of the public.
Also speaking, the special Assistant to Ebonyi State Governor on fertilizer and the AG General Manager of Ebonyi State Fertilizer blending Plant, onuebonyi, Mrs. Emerald Akaji said the arrest was a breakthrough in the quest of the State government to rid the State of fake and adulterated agro chemicals in tandem with the federal government’s policy on agriculture.
She lamented that farmers who fell victim by patronizing adulterated fertilizer would end up having their crops shine green but with very poor yield. She added that the fake fertilizer only contain two of the four compulsory components of a good fertilizer blend and cautioned members of the public against patronizing Golden fertilizer 20 -10-10 which according to her the company has stopped manufacturing.
Some of the suspects claimed that they were only loaders and not the manufacturers, adding that they did not know the contact address of their boss who hired them for the job. They also claimed that most of the fertilizers were usually brought in from Enugu for them to offload.
About 101 bags of the fake fertilizer were confiscated as exhibit as the suspects would soon be arraigned in court
