Ebonyi state government said its plan was to recruit only 20 persons involving males and females across I3 local government councils and 16 urban areas totaling five hundred and eighty persons in the ongoing recruitment of neighborhood security watch exercise that has over 9,000 applicants as first batch.
The state Commissioner for Internal Security, Border Peace and Conflict Resolution, Hon. Stanley Okoro Emegha disclosed while addressing journalists after the conclusion of the screening exercise at Pa- Ngele Oruta township stadium Abakaliki.
He said that the security job requires people who have passion for it, noting that the exercise would be devoid of political patronage, stressing that only those who passed their physical training with security chiefs, including Nigeria Police Force and Nigeria Army would be called for the job.
He noted that those people would be recruited into community policing if they are qualified when its own time comes.
According to him, “We are looking for people who have passion for this job. It is not political motivated and will not be compromised.”
“We are going to take those that have passion for it and can as well endure. Obviously, we might convert them into community policing, as the exercise is going to come in batches but we want to first of all streamline ways of handling it.”
“The Inspector General of Police said 50 persons per community and if it is so, we are going to recruit 7000 persons in Ebonyi state but financing it only by the state government alone every month will be difficult because of the present economic meltdown.”
“As such, we are starting with the first batch which state government is very prepared to carry and that will not be more than 580 persons cutting across thirteen Local Government Areas and sixteen urban areas, that is the numbers we are going to take for now.”
“We have up to 9,000 persons that picked the form but it is not by paper qualifications only, we are still going to push all of them for physical screening which will be carried out by soldiers, you may look fit now but when you go into the field, you may not be fit as such, we don’t want to compromise; we want Ebonyians who are physically fit to do the work”, he added
However, the commissioner said proper arrangements have been put in place to ensure the set objectives are achieved, advising the applicants to shun act capable of jeopardizing the future.
In the issue of community policing, federal government said 50 persons per community which will give 7000 persons to Ebonyi state. The commissioner said the State Government is enthusiastically waiting for Federal Government on the stipulated design on how everything will be done.
Some of the screened persons including Miss Joy Ogbonna and Chima Joseph promised to contribute their quotas in ensuring that the security of people and property are maintained if selected.
