Suspected armed robber on 21st June, 2020 invaded the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC Office in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State and carted away valuables from the office.
It was gathered that the 75 years man who is the security officer at the INEC office was away from his duty post when the suspect made his way into the office of the Electoral Officer and took way some leftover materials from the 2019 general election.
Inside Source told Citizens’ Advocate that the suspect allegedly from Ndufu Alike Ikwo, used a device to remove the door frame, entered into the office and packed rechargeable lamps used for the last general election for night duties but some that were not used were reserved for next election.
The suspect also loose down, ceiling fan in the EOs office among other things and made away with them.
According to the source, after looting the INEC office, the hoodlum proceeded to a computer business center opposite the College of Education Ikwo, and also cratered away some of their properties before inviting a tricycle operator to come and carry the looted properties to his house.
It was on the process of packing the looted properties into the tricycle that luck ran against him and he was caught by the villagers who handed him over to the police. But the suspect allegedly escaped from the police station.
“The people saw the boy, arrested him, handed him over to the police at Ndufu Echera, later the matter was transferred to the State CID but the guy ran away from the police when he was called to make his statement.”
The source further disclose that following the development, the police withheld the INEC security officer and the Keke driver while there is a serious manhunt to arrest the fleeing suspect.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ebonyi State Command, DSP Loveth Odah confirmed the robbery but denied the knowledge of a suspect escaping from the police investigation unit.
The PPRO said the matter is under investigation.
Her words, On 22 June, 2020, one Ojuatu Victoria Assistant Electoral officer INEC Ikwo local Government, came to the station and reported that one Okey Gabriel 75 years old, a security officer at INEC office Ikwo reported that on 21st while he was not on his duty post a thief broke into the office and carted away with standing fan, two cartons of rechargeable lamp and three ceiling fans.
Following the report, the DPO Ikwo visited the scene of the crime. The security officer was invited for questioning.
So immediately after that, the police moved into investigation and one Elem Chidi and Nwekeoyo Chikwado were arrested by the police. Two ceiling fans, one carton of light INEC property with other stolen items were recovered from the suspect’s residents.
In the process of interrogating the suspects, they made useful confessional statement.
She commended residents of the area for being proactive and urged the security officers to avoid leaving their duty post to avert hoodlums coming to perpetrate their evil. Security men should also have security numbers so that if there is danger you can call for assistance.”
