The magistrate court sitting in Abakaliki on Monday 6 June, 2020 arraigned Mr. Collins Monye, 35, for the assault of 11 years old Miss Esther Nkwede.
Recall that Miss Esther sometimes last month allegedly jumped a two (2) storey building in a bid to escape the torture of Mr. Collins and wife who she lives with as a house help.
Also recall was that, Esther after taking the action for fear of being beaten up climbed their resident gate and passed her night at the nearby bush where she was picked up by a Good Samaritan who assured her of her safety before agreeing to meet with the family.
He, however, denied some allegations made against him after allegedly admitting to them at the initial stage.
It is against this backdrop that he was arraigned and charged for assault punishable under section 355 of Ebonyi state law of 2009.
The charge sheet reads thus, “That you, Monye Collins ‘M’ on the 18th day of April 2020 at Uloanwu street off Omege street, Amike Aba in the Abakaliki Magisterial District did unlawfully assault one Esther Nkwede ‘F’ aged 11years by flogging her all over her body with cable wire which caused her harm and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 355 of the criminal Code, Cap 33, Vol.1 Laws of Ebonyi state of Nigeria, 2009.”
In her ruling, Magistrate Esther Ezeugo granted Collins bail in the sum of N150,000, under a guarantor who must be a civil servant resident around court area and with two passport photographs.
