A 21-year-old man whose name was given as Mr. Christian Nkwegu Ogbawutu was allegedly grievously wounded by stabbing he received from his neighbour, Mr. Augustine Nkwegu, following his refusal to give him N200 paid by two of the team members after buying football at Odeligbo Okpuitumo, Abakaliki Local Government Area, Ebonyi State.
Narrating the ugly experience on his hospital bed at Ace Hospital Obugiya Amachi Junction, the victim, Mr. Augustine Nkwegu, 17-year-old told our reporter that the 5 of them had earlier contributed N200 each and bought a football at N1000, thereafter, three persons joined them and pay likewise and he refunded one hundred naira each to those who had earlier paid N200 which the money later turns out to be one hundred naira per person.
He said, that those involved lastly agreed to give to Mr. Chigozie Iwowo who bought the ball some money as his transportation fare and also used it to patch the ball should it leak.
He explained that the accused person approached the buyer, Mr. Chigozie Iwowo after playing ball on that fateful day demanded the keeper of the football to refund his money to him or allow him go home with the ball.
At the point, some players who noticed the action taken by Christian, told him to leave the money and the football to Mr. Iwowo as they earlier agreed and he was perplexed on their argument and forcefully took the ball home.
It was gathered that the victim and his colleagues had reported the matter to the family of Mr. Christian Nkwegu, and after a proper enquiry of what happened directed him to give them the ball but he insisted that the N200 must be refunded to him before handing over the ball to them.
According to the victim, the players had wanted the ball to be giving to them joy but seeing the action of the accused person, he personally threatened to take away his property (solar energy) found outside in replace of the ball.
With that development Christian pretending going to hang his cloth went inside his house quickly took a dagger and ran after him to stab his back which he dragged with him until it pierced on his hand.
In her reaction, the sister of the victim Mrs. Felicia Mbam expressed displeasure over the incident, noting that if not God’s intervention, her brother would have lost his life over minor football game, admonishing youths to stay out of trouble for their brighter future.
