Unidentified gunmen on Wednesday afternoon attacked a bullion van at Ezzamgbo junction in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi state and killed 4 Policemen escorting the vehicle to Abakaliki the State capital.

Report said a road side iron welder was also killed by a stray- bullet.

It was gathered that the suspects dressed in police uniform shot at the police officers.

The van was moving money from Enugu to one of the commercial banks in Abakaliki.

It was gathered that the hoodlums attempted to intercept the bullion van at the busy Junction where the state government is currently building flyover, and killed the police officers.

The armed Robbers in a bid to intercept the van and cart away the money in it, first fired at the escort van carrying the Policemen before hitting on the bullion van tire.

But the driver escaped with the burst tyre to an army check point before Ebonyi State university permanent site.

Four of the Police officers were killed in the process while two sustained different degrees of injuries.

It was gathered that the gunmen who operated with two cars, headed back to Enugu State after the failed attack.

An eyewitness said, “We reversed, thinking they were heading to Abakaliki only to see the gunmen dressed in police uniform shooting one of the policemen, then we decided to take Sam Egwu’s road”.

When contacted, Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Philip Maku confirmed the incident.

He said, the robbers trailed the van from Enugu state.

He said the robbers were not able to loot the van as the driver managed to drive the van out of the area.

“They damaged one of the tires of the Bullion van but the driver was able to escape with the van. They could not give chase to the van as the driver was driving towards the Military checkpoint ahead”

The CP said the two injured Policemen have been taken to hospital for treatment while the deceased have been deposited at the mortuary.

Mr. Maku said Police has launched a manhunt for the fleeing robbers.

The ongoing construction work at the Ezzamgbo junction led to steady traffic jam which gave the Robbers opportunity to attack the van.
