Operatives of Ebonyi State Police Command on Saturday paraded an Enugu State based taxi driver Raphael Nworie over alleged kidnap of one Obasi Chigozie in Agwu Local Government of the State.
The suspect was arrested by the villagers when he came out on Saturday morning to find his way back to Enugu.
The suspect told journalists that he was just two weeks old in the business that a friend introduced him into the business after complaining that he was not my making any gain from the taxi business.
The command rescued the Agwu man and recovered N1m ransom and the Toyota Corolla belonging to the Enugu kidnapped victim during gun battle while two policemen who sustained injuries in the gun duel are being treated.
Raphael Nworie, a native of Nkanu East, Enugu, Enugu state disclosed that his gang kidnapped the man in Awgu, Enugu state and took him to Alex Ekwueme Federal University Alike- Ikwo area, Ebonyi state where they dumped the man after collecting N1m ransom.
He said, “We kidnapped one man in Awgu, Enugu state on 24th July, 2020 and brought him to Ikwo, Ebonyi state so that he cannot know where we came from. On our way going back, we parked on the road before police started shooting on us and we all entered the bush. In the morning, when I came out to find my way, I was caught by the villagers. Three others are still on the run, I was the only one that was arrested. It is one of us that knows Ikwo and we decided to bring the man to anywhere in Ikwo.”
“The man gave us N1m cash as ransom and the money is in the man’s vehicle we kidnapped him with. We abandoned the money inside the vehicle and fled when we exchanged fire with the police. I just ventured into this business two weeks now and this is the first time we are kidnapping somebody.”
“The man had food in his booth. When we dropped him in Ikwo, we gave him N5,000 and water. The man’s name is Obasi Chigozie. We forced the man to give us his ATM pin number and he released it to us. We then went to POS and withdrew the N1m. I am a taxi driver and it is one of my friends that introduced me into this business of kidnapping. He told me to join the business that I will be making more money.”
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Loveth Odah who paraded the suspect alongside two other suspects who are agents of hostage business at Ezzagu Ishielu Local Government Area, said Obasi Chigozie who became sick following the incident has reunited with his family for medical attention.
Odah further said that the case would be transferred to Enugu police command after preliminary investigation.Follow us
