In a bid to mitigate the effects of climate change in Ebonyi state, the governor of Ebonyi state, Engr. Apostle David Umahi has selected 30 schools across the state for the establishment of Orchards as well as inauguration of Climate Change School, Focal Persons among teachers with passion for environmental protection in Ebonyi State.
Speaking during the opening Ceremony of Climate change Policy and Adaptation Action Plan on Tuesday 4th August, 2020 at Osborn La palm Hotel, Abakaliki, Governor Umahi reiterating his administration’s Commitment to curtail the effect of Climate change in the state saying that many schools have been selected for the kickoff of this programme.
The governor who was represented by his deputy, Dr. Eric Kelechi Igwe stated that establishment of climate change plots in some schools will help to educate students on how to save the global effect of climate change, adding that the present administration led by Governor David Umahi has played a significant role in this regard


Umahi said, “It is my pleasure to welcome you to this special event centered on the development of Ebonyi State Climate Change Policy and Adaptation Plan. This policy clears to make goals, objectives and certain strategies mitigating the consequences for Climate Change.”
“Global Climate Change has certain impacts on Nigeria, particularly on Agricultural production and other associated livelihood. It has remained an impediment to some certain efforts of government at all levels to reduce poverty amongst the populace and also retarded the ground to ensure equity in the distribution of development benefits.”
“Our administration recognized the issue of Climate Change as a Tropical one by placing it on the front body. For this reason, we have established a Climate Change office saddled with the responsibility of ensuring a viewing and sustainable Ebonyi State.
“I’m pleased to reiterate that Climate Change office headed by Senior Special Assistant, Dr Obianuju Alo, together with Ministry of Environment and other relevant ministries have not failed in the drive of making Ebonyi State a signpost of Excellence in vindicating and combating the effects of Climate Change.”
“My administration has recorded and still recording appreciable and humongous modest results in our effort to combat the adverse effects of Climate Change. We have tried to construct a pulverization plant at Umuoghara, Ezza North Local Government Area, the biggest in Nigeria with capacity to process 200 metric tons every day.”
“We have established quite number of Solar panels that contribute a good number of power supply in Ebonyi State.”
“We have procured Carbon free environment tricycles which are already in use in our state and this is the only state in Nigeria that has this solar-power cited”
“We have also launched Ebonyi Green Project Campaign which is aimed at making the state greener. We are rolling out Climate Change sensitization plans on tree planting programs across the 13 Local Government Areas of the state which I believe have been completed.”
“We have also inaugurated Climate Change officers in the 13 Local Government Areas of the state with the responsibilities of assisting in coordinating Climate Change programs at the grassroots levels”, Dr. Igwe explained.
He further added that under Ebonyi State green programs, he has directed that trees be planted along all major roads and rural areas, especially those construction under this administration as well as selecting of 130 schools for the establishment of school orchard which is ongoing and also Establishment of Climate Change plots in a number of schools, which will help to educate students on the global change of Climate Change and how they can contribute to save the planet, earth.
Earlier in her address, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Climate Change, Dr Mrs. Obianuju Aloh said Climate change is not only affecting our environments but all aspects of human endeavor, commending the state government and other partners for adopting the policy of tree planting and taking other necessary measures to mitigate the menace of Climate Change in the state
She said, “Climate Change or Global warming has become a reality, a defining issue of our time and much faster than all scenarios predicted. It is not just an environmental issue, as many people might believe. It is an all-encompassing threat to Health, Agricultural, Peace and Security and all to the Global Economy. Storms, droughts, rising sea level, flooding, irregular rainfall patterns, rapid rise in zoonotic and tropical diseases, persistent rise in global temperature, etc, are bleak signs of what we are facing today.”
“Large regions are becoming uninhabitable because they are either flooded or they hardly get sufficient rainwater in due seasons.”
“Today, Ebonyi State Government is sending a strong signal that she is not going to wait until it is too late.”
“The state government, through my office has embarked on different programs aimed at mitigating Climate Change Menace in the state.”
“I want to very specially thank our visionary Governor, who saw the need to combat the menace of Climate Change in the state and our country at large.”
In their separate remarks, the Caretaker Chairman of Abakaliki Local Government Area, Comrade Ben Nwovu said the need to tackle climate change menace in the society cannot be overemphasized, adding that the tree planting exercise has kick-started in his area, while the Chairman, Ebonyi State Coordinators’ Forum, Eze Beatrice, maintained that the climate change policy is a welcome development which man shouldn’t be reminded of, urging the ignorant citizens to take the steps of the rural dwellers who are passionate about such.
The event was attended by stakeholders from different parts of the state.
